It was not deleted. The subject was translated. Sorry the forum code does not support special characters in the title.

The proficiency in target language is IMHO more important, because what one does not understand in English, can sometimes be understood from context... or just replaced by something else which makes sense.Kestenvarn wrote:But you need complete proficiency in two languages to translate something properly...
It is not necessary to translate Wesnoth from English. Languages with 100% core packages are also: Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French (99.9%), German, Italian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Slovak, Swedish. So a translator could use any of there languages as a source. (Of course, double translation is double incorrect; but still better than nothing.) Here is a script which inserts another translation as comments into PO file.
Dujiang says he also speaks Kazak. I don't speak Chinese well enough to translate anything, sorry.

Yeah, exactly. While I consider myself more or less fluent in French from living in Africa for 2 years (English being my mother tongue), I wouldn't dare try to translate a campaign from English to French, even though I did do a lot of on-the-fly translations of spoken English to French. I just know, not matter how grammatically correct I could get it, the translation would always have a foreign feel to it. I think I could do better than "All Your Base," but it certainly wouldn't be very poetic.Viliam wrote:The proficiency in target language is IMHO more important, because what one does not understand in English, can sometimes be understood from context... or just replaced by something else which makes sense.Kestenvarn wrote:But you need complete proficiency in two languages to translate something properly...
However, I wouldn't hesitate translating from French to English. Too bad that's hardly needed here. We'll have to see how good I get with Chinese after I'm there for a year or two...
