You can use xim as an input method and scim tools for chinese caracter input.

Working well but may require you switch to a quite new version of Linux (SuSE 8.2 could not run it for me, for instance).
Fedora Core 4 has it as a standard package.

Thanks. I'll have a look at it.
I think that should work on my Kubuntu (still Freezy Badger, need to upgrade when I'll get time).

You might want to have a look at

which has a section on installing SCIM on Debian (probably also work for *buntu).
