For MacOSX programs for image creation there are three possible choices depending on what you want (and what you have):
1) Photoshop... the all time heavy weight of pixel pushing Versatile in use but import / export can be weak.
2) GraphicConverter... shareware A program I would never want to be without. Batch processing. Reasonable editing and reads just about any graphic format out there... still got and Atari 800 .neo file? Something from the Amiga perhaps? GC will read them all and export to most with full flexibility.
3) GIMP... if you want open source and have fink etc installed
Overall I'd suggest GC... if you don't already have it then definitely get it!!! ( http://www.graphicconverter.net)
