Updates

Post by Tiamat Ruler »

I just joined the forum and I dunno where I should put this, but I'll put it here because it sounds right. I have a suggestion about updates. Is there a way you could make it so we can just update it and not download the whole thing again? Some people have slow computers and it takes hours to download over 100 MB. But if you have a way that would allow someone to just update it, that wouldn't take very long at all. Just a suggestion but if you could find a way I, and I'm sure others would too, greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

You're not the first person to suggest this and the answer still remains the same Self-compiling and Xdeltas . But even then quite often there are small optimising changes in huge number of campaign/data files, and we're in a period of rapid translation and art updates, which means you'd have to get those files as well. Adding it all together any such 'patch' would also be huge. (binary file alone takes around 3MB after best possible zip compression)

Even so, 3 MB would still be tons faster then 107...

You obviously don't understand, 3MB is just the binary file. Add changed art, translations and data and you'll hit something over 50MB (or more if god forbid anything regarding music changes). Binary file alone is not enough to run the game, and getting just new binary doesn't fix campaign bugs and is guaranteed way to be OOSed to oblivion in multiplayer.

I think that if downloading updates is not easy, you are unfortunately best off to stay with the stable versions. Perhaps get an occasional development version later in the cycle, but only for campaigns and games against the AI (so it doesn't matter if you don't update again for some time).
