It is the very same source for GNU/Linux and u$win. VC++6 project files were recently added to CVS (wesnoth.dsw, wesnoth.dsp)

Units are located in data/units/ directory, open few unit files and check how they are done (as unit files are text files use your favorite text editor).

Then you might want to read BuildingScenarios [1]
