Wesnoth not working with widescreen resolutions?

I've been playing Wesnoth for some time now without any problems what so ever. Yesterday a bought a new monitor. Its a widescreen version using a resolution of 1600x1050.

Now Wesnoth refuse to start at all. I get an Segment violation error when I start Wesnoth and the resolution is changed to 1600x2400 ...

Is Wesnoth incompatible with widescreen resolutions?

The game works fine in large resolutions. However, if your window manager pretends that the screen is larger than it actually is, the SDL library that the game relies on can misbehave. For instance, on Mac OS X there is a repeatable crash if you set the resolution to be larger than the actual screen size: https://gna.org/bugs/?func=detailitem&item_id=3705

To fix the immediate problem, you could edit your preferences file in a text editor, replacing the 1600x2400 resolution with something like 1600x1000, and set

-- this should allow you to start the game again.
