Problem getting Wesnoth for Debian
Hi all -
I've been having a problem getting Wesnoth for Debian. I'm using the website -
http://packages.debian.org/wesnoth
- and I want the latest version (0.8.10-1).
My settings in Synaptic are -
URI - http://packages.debian.org/unstable/games/wesnoth/
Distribution - unstable/
Section(s) - blank
But, when I run "update" I get the error -
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/gam ... ackages.gz: 404 Not Found
So, just wondering - where am I going wrong, and how can I fix things so that Synaptic _can_ get Wesnoth from the above repository?
Very many thanks in advance!

Re: Problem getting Wesnoth for Debian
I can't obviously see any way to make synaptic work with that particular repository; it seems to be organised differently to the way synaptic expects, with no Packages.gz file.mr_moose wrote:http://packages.debian.org/unstable/gam ... ackages.gz: 404 Not Found
Re: Problems with Wesnoth for Debian download
Hi again!
Yes - that's what I was thinking, too! I was puzzled as to why there seemed to be no package-list file.
I think I'll try one of the "unofficial" Debian sites - may have more luck there -
Thanks very much for your post!

The packages.debian.org site is designed for interactive web-browsing, not for use with apt/aptitude/synaptic. It's not actually a repository - it's more of a front-end.
I recommend that you look into the official repositories before haring off after "unofficial" sites. The complete list of official Debian mirrors can be found here:

Re: Getting Wesnoth for Debian
Hi xtifr - thanks for this!
Sounds like good advice - I'll do this.
Bye for now

You could add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
However, new Wesnoth versions usually appear in Debian Unstable quite quickly, and waiting a while would conserve wesnoth.org's bandwidth.
Code: Select all
deb http://debian.wesnoth.org/sid/ ./

Interesting.
Linux users, used to compiling their own software (doing the work for themselves) seem to regard pre-packaged binaries as a courtesy.
Mac and Windows users, on the other hand, are obviously used to their software coming already compiled, and seem to regard pre-packaged binaries as a right.
Just a casual observation. I'm actually a Mac user myself.

Heh -
It's _becoming_ a right, as it were - see this URL for the latest ...
http://klik.atekon.de/
Well , maybe not a "right" as such. An "expectation" maybe... (and I simply mean that in the sense that it shows that Linux has arrived ).
A couple of years ago, you had to be a mage to get a winmodem working with Linux. Nowadays, I would not consider a distro that *can't* get a winmodem working. ( No, I don't have a winmodem myself, I just say that as a benchmark of what now tends to be expected of Linux ).
I must pause here too, to pass on a *huge* thanks for all the devs who make (open-source, Linux, Debian and everything ) possible. You devs rock!
It's true that "klik" is only available for a few (Debian-based) distros at present, but it's promising anyway.
