Resolution problem! screen blacked out!

Post by gadi22 »

Hello, my name is Gadi.

I'm having a problem with Wesnoth's resolution(v 1.12). I wanted to play it in fullscreen but the resolution didn't fit my screen size(leptop 1366X768) and so I changed it from inside the game. But the screen disappeared, everything went black, I couldn't do anything to change it back and I couldn't even close or minimize the game. I had to reset the computer.
I have tried reinstalling the game(twice) but it didn't help - I can't enter the game, it turns black!
I figured that some of the game's options are still saved on my computer even after uninstall and there should be a way to restore them to default, but I couldn't figure how to do it externally. Help please!!

I am using Linux Mint.

The preferences are stored in ~/.config/wesnoth/preferences. If you're worried about losing something (like which campaigns you're completed), the file is human-readable; edit it. Personally, I just remove it and re-set the options I want.
I forked real life and now I'm getting merge conflicts.

The "preferences" is a file, not a directory. You can go to it in the file explorer and open it as a text file:

I have a similar resolution problem on Windows 10. I tried to do roughly the same thing outlined above, but I'm a bit of a tech idiot and was scared I'd mess something up. :p
Can someone just tell me how to translate that to Windows 10?
Thanks.

On my Windows 10 for 1.12; if you need 1.13 or some other version, replace it below

Open File Explorer:
Start -> Windows System -> File Explorer
On File Explorer, find and open the file:
This PC -> Documents -> My Games -> Wesnoth 1.12
Right click on the file 'preferences'
From the popup menu select Open With -> WordPad then click the OK button
In WordPad:
Look for and delete the two lines starting with xresolution and yresolution
Select from the menu: File -> Save
Select from the menu: File -> Exit
On File Explorer:
Select from the menu: File -> Close

On Linux the file is located in ~/.config/wesnoth someplace and also named preferences as well. Use your favorite editor.

I had a similar problem with Wesnoth 1.12 (1.13 worked fine), where the first time I went into fullscreen mode the resolution was wrong so I could only see the top left corner of the screen. What worked for me was hitting ctrl+p to bring up the preferences window so I could then change the resolution. (For some resolutions the preferences window wouldn't show up either, but when I restarted the game and pressed ctrl+p again it would work).

I don't think this would fix it though, because the issue seems to be that the default resolution when going into fullscreen mode is wrong. I think you'd have to input the correct values manually.
