How I caused the crash is I opened up the game and after about a minute of it starting up, the game crashes, no matter what I do in the meantime.

I have no ideas for what you can do, unfortunately, but it would probably be useful to the developers to know more info about your system (what OS version, graphics driver, etc.).

Do I read correctly, you're still running Windows XP? My guess is the issue is your ancient OS.
I *might* (not sure) still have an ancient XP virtual machine buried someplace in my backups (used to, but it's been a decade or more since I looked). If I find that old VM, I'll load BfW on it and see if it works. (But I'm betting not.)

Well that sucks. I used to have a Windows Vista before it broke and a friend gave me this old junk. I'm lucky to have any laptop or desktop at all. I can't afford anything like that. Fml.
You can afford Linux. Almost all packages (called distributions) are free to download, and you can replace your old system with something modern. You also get a choice of desktop programs, and some of them are very simple so they run great on older systems. Obviously it's different, and you would have to learn how to use it, but there are a hundred forums to help. (That may be a lot of work to go through to play Battle for Wesnoth, but Linux is good for a lot of other reasons as well.)

Always good advice, especially for Windows XP, since it's also likely the hardware won't run Windows 10. Many (most?) Linux distributions still support 32-bit systems.
