Did you reload a save form an older version of wesnoth? In that case you need to fix that save manually (with a text editor) and replace era_blank with era_default

thanks yes i had loaded an old save and the replacement of era_blank fixed it. sorry i didnt reply sooner, i'm not getting emails from the forum anymore...
