But I think we need look for the difference between Wesnoth 1.8 where all was fine, and Wesnoth 1.9, where the problem appears.

You could try replacing different (older) versions of the SDL, SDL_image, and libpng DLLs in your Wesnoth installation directory.

Not being a Windows user, though, I don’t know exactly what their names are or where to get older versions.

You could try SDL.dll from wesnoth 1.11 . I've built that dll from source myself rather than using libsdl.org's pre-built version, like in 1.10.

All works for me now.
But I'm not sure that this bug was fixed in 1.10.5 because I simply reinstall Windows.
