vista/7 fix
Hi,
I had a problem with 7 (the game does not start when clicking on the icon).
Here is what i did to play:
1) install the game for me only (*NOT* for everyone).
It thus install in the user setting, which can be read/save by wesnoth to play.
2) create a *FILE* [with no extension] (*NOT* a directory as read somewhere else!!) called preferences in c:/user/.../wesnoth1.8/userdata/
and also in \Documents\My Games\Wesnoth1.8 if it exists.
3) if it still doesnot work (and it was the case for me even though stderr didnt give me any problem), create a shortcut on wesnoth and at the end of the command line, after the " add --nosound --nomusic
The sound was indeed a problem, as i turned it on again in game, it killed wesnoth... dont know why asit worked fine before...

Re: vista/7 fix
It would be helpful if you posted what the error message was before and possibly your computer specifications.
Considering the fact that many people play Wesnoth on Vista and Windows 7 without encountering problems it is highly unlikely that Wesnoth is incompatible with these Operating Systems - therefore your fix probably solved something else.
It sounds like a soundcard problem to be honest...
