Unstuffing .tar files

What program can be used to unstuff .tar files? Stuffit opens, then closes itself!
Fate is like an unpopular restaurant in which odd waiters come and give you things you didn't ask for and don't always like.

An up-to-date stuffit should do it. Otherwise you can use tar from the terminal. type 'tar -x ' (with a final space) then drag the file from the finder to the terminal window.
