Your data files are in correct place but images aren't loaded for some reason ...

/usr/local/share/wesnoth/data/core/images/buttons/*


Either there isn't images or your libpng is somehow broken and can't open images.

I had checked the sdl_image-installation, but libpng is a better idea. ;)
I had to install the package libpng3.

Better do so,

Although being much a fan of another distro, I use rather debian nowadays - especially when I want to be productive. Gentoo rocks - Debian just rocks more ;)
