Fix version is a big word for what we were discussing here. Right now I am trying to rewrite the unit files so they reflect the changes on balance that have been done from version 1.0.2 to 1.1.11. After that, I will try to rewrite the campaing files, so they follow the current storyline. I am not making other changes on the program, so there won't be any change in the look and feel of the program.
I have seen that is feasible, but the question is, do you think it is useful?

Wouldn't it be more useful to find out what is actually causing the slow-down? Since historical binaries are available on Windows, it should be relatively easy to pin-point the version where the problems were introduced. Checking the change-log for that version should give a pretty good idea about what could have introduced the issue.

Unless it happened progressively and not suddenly. I have no idea, it's just a thought that it might not be that simple =/

Completely agree, but the only thing I know how to program is scripts, so I have chosen a part where I can do something.
I know that it is not the solution, but this is the little that I can contribute to the game. If it is not useful for anyone, then I will drop the idea; I like to do this type of text transformation scripts, it is like a game itself for me.

zookeeper wrote:Now that I think of it a bit further...yeah, definitely too much work if you'd port things other than balancing changes (that would be pretty simple). If you'd want to port campaign changes, graphics (other than terrain - terrain should be easy) etc, too much work.
You are right, I am wrong. I have tried to make something that could be reusable with further versions, and too much manual work is involved, at least for my current skills.
Sorry if anyone was expecting anything from this, although for the posts I was not even aiming in the correct direction.

Perhaps one of the good developer will be so nice one day to include an option which turns off all the little things which slow don the computer : Flags waving in the wind, these nice looking combat animations etc. to opimize speed on slower computers.

sorry sounds bad... this version of the pack is ONLY for the english release of win98se ... there are localized version for many languages

links to other language version
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

if you got problems post them in this forum... but such problems big problems are unusual (except if you got an localized version of win98se) ;)

try with f5 pressed on bootup to get to the bootmenu then activate shift-f8 to get an save boot up (with questioning every line) ...then you can perhaps see which loaded part is the problem.

muhahaha ...

Sorry, you should really consider to get a linux distribution. As already has been said, try out some live CDs, talk to people and surf a bit in the net to get to know which distro fits you best.

My laptop (266MHz 64MB RAM) runs 1.1.11 fine and at perfectly playable speeds. Unless Woo_Hoi's computer is slower than this then I would like to know what he is doing to Wesnoth to make it run so slowly. Yes, my laptop inches through loading and menus, and scrolling too. But Gameplay is fast enough not to be frustrating. Recently I heard of the :nosaves command, and now I can say I find my laptop good enough for small games. I wouldn't play massive 8 player maps though.

I'm running 1.1 on a Win98 machine with 350MHz and 192MB RAM and it runs fairly well (except for the help system; that crawls.) I second the suggestion of turning off halo effects. Before I turned that off on my system, it slowed things down to the point where I simply couldn't recall mages of light; they were just unusable. Now, no problems.
