Windows XP and Linux Mint
Pentium IV 2,5 GHz
2 GB RAM
GF 7600 GS AGP 256 MB RAM
Drivers: few different

1.8.6 - no problems
1.9.X (rc 1 too) - slower map scrolling, slower fighting animation, lags and game freezing (few seconds) when zooming

CPU working:
1.8.6 - about 50%
1.9.8 - about 90-100%

Map animation off slightly helps, but still is not good as 1.8.

Wesnoth 1.1.0 US English on OS X 10.6.8, intel core i7, using 10~50% CPU when idle.

I started some games locally to test. I simply watched CPU usage over time side by side with wesnoth, not moving the mouse and not scrolling:
Local Game 2p Caves of the Basilisk: 8~10% of one core, not moving mouse, not scrolling, just watching CPU usage over time. Recruiting more units didn't seem to increase CPU usage. In 1.8, it was using 4% CPU.
Local Game SX Add On by Mabuse, Castle of Cantar 5 random players, idle: 30~50% CPU. Some animations noticeably slower than 1.8 version (note I am talking about some custom introduction animations set by Mabuse, unit animations are set to 16x, skip AI, same in 1.8 and 1.10) . I was a little surprise by 1.8, it was also using 5% CPU usage when idle, same settings. I thought Wesnoth would use less than 1% CPU when nothing is happening with all animation stuff turned off.

I picked SX because it's where I noticed the problem and it also seems to exacerbate things.

The following are Display options:
Off: Show color cursor
Off: Show floating labels
Off: Show haloing effects
On: Show team colors
On: Show grid
Off: Animate Map
Off: Show Unit Standing animations
Off: Show unit idle animations

1) Problem Details -
I am running Wesnoth 1.10 and I have very annoying issue :( . Have to wait for a long time to load a campaign or a saved game. I am attaching a screenshot of the problem. You can clearly see that I get a non-responding error. The cache folder (which resides in C:\Users\Documents\My Games\Wesnoth 1.10) has a size of 17 MB and it contains 353 compressed file. What are these :hmm: and can I remove it. Also please how to speed up the game...

3) Performance Metrics -
Eating my CPU as high as 50 % even when not doing anything(I mean in idle state)!! Attached a screenshot.

Repeating a test case, because I think larger maps cause larger idle CPU usage:
All on OSX 10.6.8 with Wesnoth 1.10.1 with the latest Mabuse's SX RPG. Same Computer as before, a Core i7.

1. Base case. Choose to start a game, but stay on the leader selection page. Do not click "I'm Ready" button to start the map.
CPU usage when idle: ~3.0% of one cpu... What is it doing? I would think it would use less than 0.1% CPU at any time when idle on this screen.

2. Choose to start an Evil Dead SX RPG map, 5 random players
CPU usage when idle: ~35%

3. Choose to start a Wizard of War 2 Map. 5 random players
CPU usage when idle: ~35%

In both WoW2 and Evil Dead SX RPG maps, the starting idle CPU percentage is the same.

Later I will update with the Idle CPU percentage when the map is fully revealed.

Hi,

I'm facing extreme CPU usage when I'm playing Wesnoth 1.9.14 on my Ubuntu 11.04 with 8 Go of RAM and an Intel Core i5.
--> "Extreme" means here 300-350% of CPU, according to gnome-system-monitor. Thanks to the system-monitor applet of my task bar, I can merge my 4 cores' usage to something like 80-85%.
--> "playing Wesnoth" means that I'm facing it ONLY when playing on the game's map. No hot CPU in the main menu, neither when I activate any other windows above the game's map (preferences, save/load,...). I had tried turning down all graphical features (animated things especially), but that won't change anything.

I was using Wesnoth 1.8 without any problem two days ago. It seems related to 1.9., downloaded from ppa.launchpad.net/rhonda
Thanks for any help...

1) Problem Details - Extremely low FPS rate when scrolling and moving units

2) System Details - Windows XP Pro SP3, Wesnoth 1.10.3, 512m RAM, GF6600 128m, broadband

3) Performance Metrics - approx. 85% at peak level, all is taken by Wesnoth, on idle it takes approx. 5-10%

I'm playing Legends of Wesnoth and between yesterday and today it suddenly slowed down. That's the only add-on I've downloaded. The loading screen takes 15 seconds; the buttons light up 5 seconds after I mouse over them; the frame rate in the game is very low; sounds sometimes play and sometimes don't. Activity Monitor shows Wesnoth taking 88 % CPU when idle.

MacOSX cpu use

Post by denix »

Hi all,

for MacOSX users, try this:
http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=38746

It worked for me, but a bit more testing is welcome!

Wesnoth on my Macbook is very slowed.

The CPU usage is between 94% and 98%. The RAM usage only 61,0 MB.

Here my specs:

Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2010
Intel Core 2 Duo 2,4Ghz
RAM 4Gb 1067MhZ DDR3
Video NVidia GeForce 320M 256MB
OS X 10.8.4

The problem is heavier if I enable the colorful cursor in the Video options. I've update the SDL libraries but it doesn't change anything.

Same problem. SDL fix didn't help.

Activity monitor claims that Wesnoth is using "100.1%" of my CPU...
