Some units takes more damage from different kinds of attacks all of them are listed under resistances...
Examples
Horse riding units are weak agains piercing attacks
Skeleton units (and in some degree all undeads) are resistant to piercing and cold attacks, resist a bit blades, are weak vs fire and crush and can be wiped by holy attakcs.
Heavy infantry takes less damage from physical attakcs and normal damage from magic ones (cold fire holy)
etc...

To see how much a unit resists an attack type, right click on the unit, select 'Unit Description', then select 'Resistance'. It will show you how resistant a unit is to different types of attacks.

If a unit is 0% resistance to an attack, the attack will do full (unmodified) damage. If a unit has greater than 0% resistance to an attack, the attack's damage will be reduced by that %. If a unit has less than 0% resistance to an attack, the attack's damage will be increased.

Note that the damage an attack does will also be modified by day/night, and special factors like backstab and charge.
