A hasty alliance...

Post by gandalf »

I think that scenario is too hard.
Anybody won it yet?
I don't want to loose all my level 3 units :(

Oh yes

I did it by taking Delf and a dwarven lord, then killed the leader in 1 round.
Cheap, I know, but it seems the only way.

Huh? But how'd you get Delfador and the Dwarvern Lord to the leader?

Also Dwarvern Lords were way too easy to get previously, now they're alot harder.

I will review the difficulty of this scenario...

You should have a reasonable chanse of winning when playing on the easy level! I got some extra gold for the sceptre of fire scenario, but still, the level 2 trolls are killing my units way toooo fast :(
Right now, I have gold: -195 and 9 units against 20 visible enemy units (several level 3).

I suggest that the difficlt levels should also determine the starting levels for the enemy units and the needed XP to advance a level.

Uhh..I must confess that Hasty Alliance does not have any difficulty level differentiation at all at this time. We will correct this in future.

It's way too hard. There are so many fast trolls pouring in north of Li'Sar and each of them does heavy damage every turn, killing even Paladins easily.

After several tries. I've managed to come close to the leader with a Druid escorted group of Avengers and an Arch Mage. But meanwhile, further trolls move fast into the back of my remaining units.

What units have better defense values or a much more reliable attack value? It's just so difficult to kill the enemy when units miss most of the time or take major damage after every hit.

I think you want to try the Dwarf Horde approach -- cheap, disposable, and they don't suck in caves! (unlike Paladins and Avengers) Of course, Shydes and mages for backup are useful.

I finished this level by recruiting tons of dwarves (and recalling a few magic-users) and pushing the trolls back into the bottlenecks with them. Also by, um, lots of save-scumming. (but I think that I wouldn't need so much if I played it again, I'm starting to get the hang of thinking ahead to keep units alive) The toughest part was the battle in the starting area, where I had to use lots of magic-users and heros to kill all the level-3 trolls that jump on you immediately.

Yes, recruiting a lot of dwarves did the trick! And when I have played the scenario once, I think I know how to win easier.
The caves are narrow, and dwarves can keep the trolls away for a while.
But it costs a lot :?

dwarves....

I started this scenario with abut 600 gp... After about 10 rounds i had 0 and last of my units were slaughtered by hordes of trolls ;\
One troll warrior can defeat two dwarven fighters easily... and my precious Princess quickly run out of cash and stops recruit enything.
That was fun :)

It was actually possible to complete it - with a great number of dwarven thunderers and save/load technique... Their ranged attack is quite powerfull, so with a little help they're able to knock down the trolls with a few shots... But it was hard. ;\

I cheated, reduced the enemy's starting gold level to 75, increased lisar's to 200, and was just about able to get enough units far out enough so that I could expensively use lots of dwarf thunderers to get rid of the trolls. Taking lots of dwarfs up the right, and a small group of a white mage, a couple of elf marhalls and delfador up the left, I was able to clear the way to use one final move to surround the enemy leader, take most of the health with delfador then finish him with dwarves.

A nasty level.. the trick, I found, is to just get four heroes in the first round, and then to keep buying dwarf thunderers and pushing out until you get delfador and a few thunderers within range of the leader.

Perhaps a simple way to balance this level would be to reduce the enemy's gold? I rather like the surprising start, but I find that it's almost impossible to push the enemy back on the right hand side of the map; I just get into stalemates, sometimes losing ground and then losing Lisar.

I won this scenario by recalling 1 avenger + 1 champion + 1 berserker dwarf + 1 steelclad dwarf in turn 1. Then protected both delfador and konrad. Killed the wolf rider with kalenz, killed all the left trolls with dwarves, delfador, elves (& konrad !).

Then I recruited tons of dwarves (3 warriors for 1 thunderer) ran to help li'sar and sent my avenger, champion, delfador and 1 white mage on the left to explore. Then, they attracted trolls and organized defense around a village and killed all rambling trolls (but without pushing too far as I did not want to loose an unit).

Without reinforcement, the attack on the right flank lost its strength and despite heavy casualties (I got one dwarvish lord, 1 berserker, 2 lvl 1 dwarf warriors + 1 elvish druid & kalenz & konrad remaining), my task force poured easily to the north as the AI continued to send trolls to death to my well retrenched units on left flank.

Then, victory was inevitable

Impressive

Impressive, Benj, but how did you possibly hold them off? I can barely break through on the left, and on the right, they just swarmed me with 3 trolls and 3 troll warriors. I think I might try sending all my best units to the left, and just pour cannon fodder into the right, let them die. I kept losing Kalenz when I had him assist on the right.

Here is a replay as it worths one thousand words ;-). I must confess I did a load/save once or twice on turn 13. As you will see, dwarves suffer heavy casualties.

there are two major problems i encounter-

1- Li'sar does not recuit past the second or third turn, and her units all attack trolls, quickly advancing them to troll warriors. (they get 10 xp/kill)

2- If Kalenz and Delfador stay behind, all my troops die; if the attack, they die.

any suggestions?

sorry, i haven't figured out how to post saved games :( but i have 2 avengers, 2 paladins, 2 champions, a shyde, a white mage, and a few other second level units.
