Devling Art & Animation Input

Post by dreampilot »

I've decided to move to a thread in this forum for the next step of these. Since I'm fairly new at animating and have not yet done so for this game I'd like some input if I do things wrong.

I have an example of the first unit in the Devling Faction.

My worry is it will look to slow when it actually swings. I wanted to make it clear the other devling holding the club is actually caught in the strong ones swing. Let me know how you think this work and if I should change it.

heh, yes it's ment to be that way, one of them jumps forth with the nail and pretty much hopes to not get the hammer in the head.

Aww, cute. If you wanna make the little guy flying along with the club a little more pronounced, try adding another frame with him swinging forwards at the end while the hammer stays still. Right now he just kind of stops rigidly, meaning he's hard to discern as separate from the hammer.

I think you should have the Devling with the nail jump one frame earlier. All the motion is currently at the same moment so it seems odd that you have 2 frames in the beginning.

It looks terrific though, and what I just mentioned is just something small that I think would make it look even better. I'm really impressed with your work to date. =)

Thanks for the good feedback. I agree it probably will look better with an extra frame at the end and I made the one with the nail jump faster.

Let me know which you like best

Looks very nice but maybe you could add a fifth frame in which they're part ways back? The one holding the nail jumps back in a nice fashion but middle one especially jumps very heavily...

It might look better if the nail actually went down when it was hit with the hammer. ;) Right now, the guy smashes it with the hammer but it just stands still.

Pretty good, though!

Yup, your both right, adding a frame to the end and making the nail go down more, thanks for being observant

Another advantage is: you can use this animation rather unchanged for all three southern directions. It might make sense to have one even more straight south but it's not really important. Just add one going slightly ne or nw and thank to mirroring you'll have a nice set of directional animations. To reduce the problem with straight north/south you might give it the original animation and the mirrored one with 50% chance each. Then you should have a very nicely anmiated unit.

fixed it among other things for these. Still not sure. I tried one version with just 1 frame for the swing, might look better. Still haven't decided.

One alternative might be to actually add 1 more frame on the way back for it not to look like he swings backwards faster then forwards. I don't know how many frames the game supports and if it looks good in game with 6 frames for the attack. It's kind of ambitious but if it works all the better ;)
