I just want to add some of my own things:
Doing the sketch part with pencil and paper, for me, is much nicer and faster than digital.
But, if you must do digital, another approach is to block out forms with a 50% sepia or orange brush as opposed to line, this way the sillouette and even some form starts to happen.
*also a friend of mine commented that using white to erase was a good trick, but in Wesnoth it's actually really bad considering all portraits are on a transparent layer. However I keep a white and black layer under my work to check how the image is working, plus it helps to find stray brush marks.
