Who do I need to talk to? (Wesnoth terrain graphics)
Well, I had a hard time chosing the right forum to post this, hopefully this is it.
I'm currently developing a mod for another game and I'd like to reuse a couple of Wesnoth's terrain artwork.
Naturally, the mod is free of charge, and whoever created the graphics would be properly credited.
For starters, I'm interested in the mountain artwork. Who created that? Any chance I could get the permission to use it in a free mod for another game?
Sorry for the naive nature of the thread, but I figured I could at least ask, worst that can happen is that I'm NOT granted permission, right?

I think anyone can use wesnoth-related material. As long as it isn't used to make other people pay money for it since Wesnoth is open-source. You might need to ask around in the art-contribution thread if no-art developer aka art contributor or director comes along. Either that or bug them on IRC if they are on
Goodluck.
Goodluck.

I think a person with the username "pekka" on these forums did (I might be wrong); he hasn't posted on these forums for years.rezaf wrote:For starters, I'm interested in the mountain artwork. Who created that? Any chance I could get the permission to use it in a free mod for another game?
The Wesnoth code & content is licensed under GPL 2+ (http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Wesnoth:Copyrights); you may reuse Wesnoth's assets as long as you confirm to the terms of that license. If that doesn't suit you, you may try to contact pekka for permission to use them (the Wesnoth project does not own the rights to its assets; the respective authors do).
This is all wrong.cookie wrote:I think anyone can use wesnoth-related material. As long as it isn't used to make other people pay money for it since Wesnoth is a free-ware product.

The mountains were done by freim [1] [2]; pekka did the human castle (and probably other things I don't recall).
EDIT: It looks pekka did at least some of the impassable mountain peaks, though.

Sigh. No, Wesnoth isn’t freeware. Wesnoth is open-source software and the only requirements for redistribution of any of its parts are those set by the GNU GPL.cookie wrote: As long as it isn't used to make other people pay money for it since Wesnoth is a free-ware product.

Thanks for the replies.
Well, I guess that's the downside of the open-sourcedness, people contribute some stuff and then disappear from the face of earth. Both artists that were mentioned haven't been on the forum since 2010.
I have no problems in theory adhering to the license, but I'm no copyright lawyer and can't be sure if it can even be applied to mods - there's stuff that's beyond my control, after all.

The GPL isn't too complicated. While we are not lawyers, if you describe in more detail what you want to do, we can probably tell you if its possible or not.
