dude

that tutorial is freaking OLD and looking back upon it there are several assertions i made that i find slightly iffy now, as well as several attempts to illustrate technique that i find are now really really bad

i should get around to making a better one at some point- don't trust that old piece of crap, guys

What can I say? Yep, it is old, but it is the best I could get (quickly) on pillow-shading.
As for tutorial on shading sprites, that'd be awesome idea.
(I wanted to link to some tutorials on the web, but half is unsuitable for Wesnoth sprites, and others seem to give some bad habits... (one suggested using "Blur" tool for antialiasing lines...?!))
So, it seems that there is not many good pixel artists, but lot of people wanting to give advices.
(And as it seems I belong in that group, therefore I shut up now.)

Before ANY shadowing is done, the sprites must first face the right way (more towards the viewer).

I am not sure if this counts for anything, but I like how they are looking right now.

If they are to be put into a campaign with mainline sprites (and this is just my opinion), they should be facing the same way as the mainline sprites so that it's all more appeasing to the eye.

Finally facing South East

I want to try some stuff with the larger sprites now! These ones actually face the right direction folks!
I made them hopefully a bit smaller to better fit in with wesnoth stuff, well, not smaller, shorter.

I may also reshade the pants later, if I get stuck or bored on the other stuff I am making.

Still doing these, even though no one is really watching.

Now the little guy is facing southeast, has the new shinier sword, and his other arm is not only visible but involved in the attack.

I do like your sprites and you have a very unique style of spriting which unfortunately isn't quite wesnoth style but still it is very good, as a quick question why are you making these sprites , not aiming to discourage you (an era, faction, campaign or just for fun?)

Well, because it is fun for one thing, and the chances I might actually be able to have a wesnoth faction of my own.

You definitely need higher contrast and stronger outlines there. Your palletes are pretty washed out- you may want to invest in some saturation. Is invest even the right word for that? Probably not, but whatever.

Your sword also looks like it's made of corrugated tin roofing that's been left in too many rainstorms. It's dull and boring- take a look at the loyalist swords, and try to implement more shininess.

I also suggest you work with mainline palettes in the beginning; I do usually recommend starting with all customs, but I know from experience how difficult it is to get a good color ramp as a beginner, and the mainline palettes are almost invariably amazing.

Invest works, so does apply. I like the dullness on the sword honestly, but I can stand to add more contrast. I am not gonna make the outlines really really dark though, I like having lighter lines.
