Re: Perseo's sprites (elvish legend-breaker)

Post by StDrake »

Reepurrs shield version could use a more skilled eyes look on the shading or, if you want to make it smaller, it should have to reveal a pixel or two more of the arm. I'd recommend staying with his edit though and making some minor edits - the shield, and clearing up the situation around the eyes which got messed up in the edit. You're getting good Ree.

I didn't describe the shield precisely cause I think something is still wrong about it's shading, but I'm not sure what, if anything, to fix about it. Someone more skilled should have a look.

I don't find the error in the shield but I agree with you... It doesn't look natural. Another thing I don't know what I must do with the face. If I put a mouth It look really really strange ¿Any ideas?.

Another project that I have in my unexperted hands: A suit of portraits for my campaign.
What do you think about this:
I now is completily misguided but It's the first time I paint anything with gimp.

A couple things....
Medea.png
Medea.png (42.16 KiB) Viewed 3877 times
1) She appears to be leaning in an awkward position, like shes leaning forward on her toes. Her left shoulder isn't correctly aligned with the right shoulder-Also, they are at different hights.

2)Her head rather resembles an egg...srry, just what i though of when i looked at it

3)Eyes are to far apart...or the nose is positioned wrong...

4)Mouth is....resembles a Trapezoid (could you add lips?)

5)Not feeling her ear...the lobe doesn't come done far enough

6)The highlights are a bit to much, some of them i feel are in the wrong places..

But otherwise, nice base portrait I did a quick, rough paint over in red to try and correct you lineart...

EDIT: Oh and i also took a shot at the legend breaker for you....

I shortened the hilt, re sized the shield (hmm...needs some reshaping), altered the sword blade, cleaned up a few stray pixels here and there, and tryed to fix his face....I also moved his shoulder down a pixel-the first on seemed to give him a hunched over burly look....Am i wrong in amusing elves generally arne't so bulky? (he is an elf...right?)

i like the angle the shield is drawn at, but that is one tricky shape to shade.
the point on the shield where the light would fall directly is not even on the shield.
trying to do it 'the way it feels' tends to result in shading that makes the shield look like something is wrapped around the arm.

so i tested my own newly calculated medicine (end of this post) a bit, trying to keep it within selections and gradients and the like, without pixel editing.
i shaded a sphere with gradients (radial gradient from one red dot to another, on the blue line in the first green circle), indexed it, and deleted the shading of the original shield so that the shading of the sphere would show instead.
i also did some hypothetical thing for shading the edge of the shield, but did not try it, as this quick mockup was more for illustrative purposes rather than trying to fix the sprite.
i mean, the edge would require some careful pixel editing rather than just the gradient tool, so that it would look recognizably like a tilted ellipse and also have some thickness.

i think i can suggest to try shading the shield thinking of it as a piece of a sphere.

Here is another of my tries. It's a mounted lietenuant. It's not finished but something doesn't work on it. Can you help me and tell me whats it?. It looks very strange in my opinion.

Thanks another time for your patient and time spend on me.

The rider needs to be larger and needs more contrast.

well it's got huge feet, a fat ass, a normal body (well a little small too actually), very thin arms and small head - is that what you were looking for?

Judging by the hole behind the rider, that unfortunate horse is missing half its rear. :P I'm presuming that wasn't intentional.

I've realised that the head was ridiculously small and I've corrected it:

Okay, this is going to be a major hammerblow to you but...

All horse rider sprites are being replaced. Which means your unit is going to seem stupid. You might want to work at 1.10 cavalry scale if this is going to be used by someone else.
Arr it be big. (Sorry this is an animation - I couldn't find the baseframe)
