I like #2 better simply because noone would wear that much leather or clothes as #1 in a desert. It's kind of hard to critique because only (CMIIW) the color has changed. Thusly, you have done a good job, but I think that desert elves would have a different attire than ones living in a forest.

Funny, I myself would have thought that desert dwellers would have been wearing more clothes, to protect themselves from the harsh sun.

But I agree that ultimately, they would be better with their own portraits, on account of how they'd wear different stylised stuff.

Good. But there is one, big, major problem. They're exactly the same portraits, just with a different colour balance.
Therefore, they still look like forest dwellers. Have a look at the portraits for UTBS for inspiration.

With those base frames, they don't need anims to look good.

Have you seen Rhyging's method of creating fire? I think that would help you, because right now it dosen't look very realistic. A forum search should yield results.

I understand that it's some magic stuff, but I saw "Pusling flame animation" and the effect you were trying to get, and I thought that it would look like fire. I think that Rhyginig's method is still worth looking into, it dosen't have to be used with fire, e.g. Sleepwalker used the same method on his wight sprites.
