Wow.

This is like reverse pillowing, where the darkest parts are closest to the camera.

Practice ye lightsource. Actually just find a lightsource. Even pillowing would seem more realistic than this.

Also, black outlines are bad. Very bad.

The perspective in all units made them look to the south-east hex (lower rigth, pink arrow)

Usually all wesnoth units are illuminated from the upper rigth (yellow arrow)

See the sample (unfinished) redraw of your birdy-lizard. You can continue editing it to fit your idea further.

Wow, fmunoz certainly did more than anything I can say about this.

As an addition, I would suggest going to find some pixel art tutorials. They're all over the place.
