Loyalist Crossbowman Possibility

Post by Major »

I thought it odd that the orcs (who have absolutley no engineering skills to talk of) should have a crossbow while the second most technically inventive race, the humans do not have one instead they have a relativeky puny bowman line. the orchish crossbowman could beat the longbowman hands down. So I thought that I could make a crossbowman for the loyalists. Critique welcome.
Here he is with four crossbow varyations and a swordsman for comparisson.

Not for mainline. Mainline is considered balanced, and generally does not include frankensteins.

Moving to Art Workshop, where you;re welcome to develop this further as UMC should you so wish.

Fair enough (I was a little quick to judge on that score - you've done a good job of emulating the swordsman's armour there - maybe too good ;) ). Random unit suggestions still don't get put into mainline, though.

You remain welcome to develop it as UMC =)

Please note: mainline has a VERY high entry standard, not only in terms of artwork, but in terms of game balance - just because loys don't have a crossbowman is no reason for them to have one.

Also, loyalist longbowman does 10-3 pierce ranged, 8-2 blade melee. Orcish crossbowman does 8-3 pierce/10-2 ranged, 4-3 blade melee. I don't see your problem - apart from a very small number of enemies strong against pierce and blade but weak against fire, the loy will do more damage on a neutral or favourable ToD...

There's a LOT of things we DO need in mainline. But brand new units are generally not among them. Have a read of this: http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28097 to see a list of things we're currently working on - animations, in particular, are a rich area. As is clearing and replacing outdated campaign-specific units, although we're a good way through this task now.

wow! I too thought it was a frankenstein at first glance, thats impressive.

If you want to contribute to the mainline I'd check out that thread that TSI linked and get in touch with Jet/the other spriters. The artists here tend to be pretty picky about what they'll accept, especially in terms of sprites, and they have fairly clear goals about what units they want done in what timeframe. The best way to get included is probably to ask them what you can do to help and how you can fit into their plans, rather then trying to freelance it.

Ah. Ok. I'll do that, although I am busy doing a swordsman North facing sprite. I'll finish that first then see what's to be done.

EDIT : I have finished the North facing for the swordsman. I realise he is a bit shorter but that could be explained that he is further away, if not I can change it. Critique welcome.

It's worth noting that, whilst the north facings project is an ongoing one, it's a relatively low priority one, as it relies fairly heavily on full sets of animations for the facing, as well as just the base frames.

Can I still contribute North facings or is there something else you I should do instead.

Yeeeahh. It should be taller. You might be able to get away with saying that he's farther away, but the intuitive fact is that people who see the sprite will go "Hey, that sprite is too short" even if you clear it up afterwards.

You're welcome to contribute to the project - I'm just warning you that your contribution might go unused for quite some time.

If you want to get into the game quickly, attempting animations is the most likely way at present to do so - but bear in mind that the standard for entry remains high.

And yeah - take a look at some of the currently extant north facings http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... rth+facing to see roughly what the idea is - generally, making the unit roughly the same size as its south facing equivalent is necessary, for instance.

Not really orders per se - it's more up to you to find something we need that you want to work on, and do it. Your north frame for the swordsman might come in useful (although various things need fixing, particularly the feet), i'll bear it in mind.

Thanks. :) I'll look around and see if I can find some work.

EDIT : I made a defending stance for the North swordsman.
