Right. Back to the crusader, I've added a few more details. The shield is what worries me the most. Any critique?

Not bad, but you could use more definition on his arm and body - right now he looks pretty flat - and the swordsman's feet don't really match the rest of the body.

Small nitpick- since he's a crusader shouldn't he have a cross across his shield or chest, or even both? And like mel said, he looks rather flat. Try to give him more definition by shading him (though I don't know why I'm talking, I still need to practice my shading technique a lot more ).

Small suggestion: you should team-color the shield. I don't really have anything else to say that hasn't already been mentioned.

Here's a first try. I also have a few questions. What type of weapon should he have? Does he have a helmet?

y would a ghost need a helmet?

Look at the spectre. It has a helmet. Ghosts wouldn't really need a helmet or any other sort of armor, but they wouldn't need dark robes or a hood either (being immaterial creatures). Maybe they are unable to remove the clothing/armor they had in life until it rots away.

To settle the helmet thing: actually the nightgaunt has a mask, and no, this ghost does not need a helmet or a mask.
For the weapon, how about a sword? Doesn't have to be any kind of fancy weapon.
I know you said this is a first try, so maybe you already know this, but his right arm needs a little more definition- it's difficult to tell it apart from the rest of the "body". (quote marks because that doesn't seem like quite the right word, but I think you can tell what I mean.)

Keep up the good work! The right arm is much better.
But I'd say the sword looks a little too natural... it doesn't seem right for a spirit to have such a physical-looking sword... I think just making the sword a bit transparent would fix it just fine.
Sorry if I'm asking too much, but... the sword jutting out from him there makes the image seem a little unbalanced. Maybe it's just me, but do you think it would look better at a diagonal pointing to the lower right? Then again, that might look unbalanced too... you're the artist, you make the call. Or maybe someone else can give better critique than me.

Alright. I'll do one with a different sword position (lower right) I'll have to work on the transparency too. I could also try another sword. This one is one of mine.

Maybe you could make the sword shine red? Just an idea, do what you want. Captain Wraithbow has a point though, the sword jutting our seems a bit off. And if you're going to make the sword so large, maybe he should wield it in both hands (do ghosts have hands? Ahh, you know what I mean ).
