By the later middle ages shields were smaller and more triangular. Soldiers also fought with a combinatin of mail and plate armor. So the shield size is technically correct, but WINR so it still works otherwise.

You NEED to break out of this pillowing thing. As an exercise: try making a sprite that is lit from the righthand side. As in, with the light source directly off to the right, so that the light is parallel to the screen.

IOW: the brightest bits don't have to be in the middle.

Don't beat yourself up too much over pillowing. I mean, we all started with some variety of pillow.

Horrible, yes, but at the time I liked it. And look at all that pillowing. He looks like a friggin' pinecone with all those highlights. :P

Speak for yourself mate, I stole the lighting and shape from the mainline sprites when I started :lol2:

Okay, obvious ripoff, but I didn't frankenstein anything. I'm giving myself a series of exercises to try and get rid of my personal demons from the ground up. I've included the original file for comparison. Is it... dare I say it... pillowed?

EDIT: and a 100% scratch unit.

Here is a small tutorial, that might help you getting rid of the pillow shading.

Thanks for the link. :)

Here's a WIP, but I think I've got something going with avoiding pillowing... or do I?

Certainly better on the pillowing, yes.

I still think you'd be better off trying some shading exercises with simple shapes, though, FWIW.

Not bad. Finish it up and we'll see. Remember that tentacles are basically long cylinders.

Don't be tempted to use more shades of the same color, the five you currently have look great.

Remember that the tentacles on the left should be darker and less illuminated than the tentacles on the right.

Complete shading, though I feel there are still some issues with the shading on the head, but I'm not sure... I think I got the tentacles right, too. I only used 5 shades this time (hooray!), and I'm quite pleased with the outcome. No more 20+ shades, I'm long over that. :)

This is a cool sprite! The only issue that I see is the lack of contrast in the shading. The three left legs should be darker than the right legs I think Iyssl already pointed this out. Also, the leg below his mouth should get darker as it goes under his mouth. It looks a little odd right now, like he is trying to eat his leg or something.

Quick increase in value. Makes the light direction a bit more clear and shows off texture a bit more.

It looks very shiny and smooth- in fact almost...metallic?
