Re: Frogger's sprites critique please UPDATE!

Post by Dixie »

As far as from-scratch goes, I think your shapes and shades are good, but (I know, you don't really plan to use them) if you plan to use any scratch-made sprites someday, you really have to work on the size. Was one of my biggest concern with my firt sprite, too, since everything must be so compressed and anatomical proportions are wrong. What I do is draw measures on the left side of the frame: about 55-56 pixels from the top are the base of the feet, 40 pixels would be around the waist, 30 pixels, the base of the neck, 28, the shoulders and 18, the top of the head. That'd be for an average standing lv1 human-sized unit, anyway. And for each subsequent levels, you can raise the head so to have one more pixel in the torso and one more in the legs. I'm not saying that's the absolute truth, but it's working for me so far and I find it useful. I'll attach you a model, if it interests you.

Also, I always draw my sprites facing left, with light coming from top left, since for some reason I am totally unable to draw anything of worth facing right. I flip them when they're about finished :?...

Ooh! This one has a lot of potential! Make sure you use highlights, right now you have the darker shades, but not the upper half.

IMHO the sword does not look flat, I think it looks well done and well shaded. though I'm not an artist
This is definitely looking good :D !
I'm finally admitting that this will be a very long (if not permanent) Wesbreak. Thank y'all for the great times, and may Wesnoth rise to become one of the most popular games on the planet.

The sword isn't flat, although it could use a bit more contrast.

The problem is, it's a flat 'plank' of metal. In reality it isn't really wide enough to have dark shadows.

Um, your new hand has only four fingers... On top of that it looks(I didn't check) smaller that the other.

Frogger has a second fresh attempt at spriting.

Every time I look at the earlier sprites in my thread, my face looks something like this: :augh:
So, I've decided to forget the Seljjes, and have a whole new attempt at becoming a semi decent spriter.

To start off, I redid one guy, and tweaked another.

Old fella.

I've been trying to mix colours more, being a fan of zero's shading, I used these guys as a reference.

And I did some tweaks on my headless nastyman.

I like the color and details, but the poses of the swordmen are ackward. The upper body could be leaning forward to keep them in balance, or the (our) left leg could be clearly behind the character and perhaps the legs could be less crouching.

The second guy's shirt looks bit pillowed and could have some texture.

And they look kinda big for Wesnothians...
