PK's Custom Art! (yippee)

Post by PsychoticKittens »

Well, since I've been doing an era since may I started out with frankens (which will not be posted unless I feel like I need Ideas for redo's) They're all done via an internet source resketched in gimp, outline, to base color, to detail, one piece at a time, usually starting at the head. They are all quite large because I feel resizing them to wesnoth's usual size lowers the quality of them. So I just leave them filling the whole hex XD, I'll upload 3 at a time to be looked at, critiqued, and so on: I hope to better my art just simply so it doesn't look bad =P

Units done:
Fiend, Demon, Lucifer, Sadist, Horned One, Demondog, Imp, Scamp, Lost Soul

They are quite well done but look a bit 2D and don't really match the mainline style, good for umc perhaps though :)

I agree with Longbow--Your pixel shading is really good, but they don't match mainline at all (Though, seeing as you posted this stuff if in this forum, I kind of assume they're not meant for mainline ;)).
As for the size? You don't have to make them small, but do keep in mind that for attack animations and the such, you'll need to have them swinging their weapons around and such (I'd like to see a little action from that badass flame sword, actually...)

Then, as I said up top, your shading is good--Actually, the whole thing's pretty good. But, they do look a little flat, as Longbow said--I think, for Lucifer, you want to change his left leg so that it's not in direct profile to the "camera", but instead at a slight angle, and then for all three of them add some darker shadows and lighter highlights.
Anyway, great job! Keep up the good work :)

Good sprites, but do they fit in 72x72? :? They look a bit big I think.
Check out my sprites!

They used to, but the lucifer looks like it has grown to big

they all fit in 72x72 since I've always used a cleared space of a default wesnoth unit (which comes in a 72x72 transparent background of course) And no, they are not meant for default, they're for my era. Unfortunatly the units I draw do not fit whatsoever with the frankens for what I can't =P Most people like my custom ones in comparison though, but I don't have the references to draw a unit for each and everyone of the... there must be atleast 480 units (since every faction has more than 30 units in it, counting level ups) All of my sources are pretty 2d, which is probly why they don't look 3d, but then again, wesnoth isn't a 3d game ;P. Still I'll try to better the art simply to make it look better.

For the animations: Isn't it possible to enlarge the space (similar to the gryphon riders movement animation)?

Heres 3 more:

Edit: The Demondog DOES have 4 legs, just the further away ones are kinda... look like they're the same leg because theres no defined line or space inbetween.

The straight up and down line on the sadist's arm looks odd IMO.

That's no guarantee they'll fit in a hex though. Take a look at alpha.png, alphamask.png and mask.png in data/core/images/terrain, that's what the unit needs to fit into.

Wesnoth isn't 3D, but because of the sprite angle (Looking down at the unit from slightly above, with the unit standing facing slightly south-east), the units don't look flat ;)

As well as the straight line down the arm, I think you want to do something about the axehead--It's kinda blurry. Other than that, though, great job! :)

Well I reworked his arms, unfortunatly there's one minor dot which will get edited out eventually, also I tried to reoutline the axe, looked slightly less blurry to me anyway.

Heres 3 more:

Edit: Oh hey, some of these don't have shadows :augh:

I believe your red is too saturated, sir.

Also, some of your units are facing straight south or straight east. Instead, they should be facing southeast.

I have un-conformist units sir, besides which if none of them are going to be at the birds eye view of default wesnoth, why not go all the way and have them face other directions too? I apologize for their bad taste in directions. Also, I like how saturated the red is; looks like demonic red to me =P is it just how the red looks or is there a technical problem with having highly saturated red?

I might as well post some more with that, since most of the other fiends have a similar base image as those you've seen, I'll move onto the refugees now:

edit: I know the phalanx and hoplite are facing the wrong way, but if they ever get attack animations it will fit because they'll face the shield towards the enemy, and place the spear over it with their head turned.

Because the Wesnoth tile images are, I believe, viewed from a similar angle to the units, it will look strange to have units that are viewed from a different angle on top of them ;)
(Or at least, that's what I remember--I recall that, in the early days of Volcano Island, I drew myself some sprites for Jakini that were straight forward, no angle. Leaving my bad spriting aside, they looked awful in-game)
Also, it's not "wrong" to have them bright red, but it will make them stand out from the backgrounds and other units in a way that looks like it was unintentional, IMO. Of course, you could use that for something, but I have no idea how you'd do it :?
