Re: Woodmouse's sprites

Actually, I used a size guide. The Elvish Captain.
Anyway, I moved the head a few pixels.

Sorry about double posting, but I did so many edits and somehow feel like no one notices them, so...
Well.
Here's a thinner body. Is it better? Or should I make it even more smaller?
Image
And a Dark Elf Fighter:
Probably not finished, though.

Are the proportions like Wesnoth-size in this one?

Whoah... what you can do, Woodmouse, is delete and repost with the edited version. You're right, nobody notices the edits.

It's looking a lot better. It still looks bigger than the Wesnoth standard, but for practice purposes, that's not all that important. You could make it a bit smaller in general if you wanted. I did a quick paintover to demonstrate a few points:
elvish_guy.png
elvish_guy.png (2.43 KiB) Viewed 2993 times
Highlights: I made his feet and hands significantly bigger - Wesnoth sprite style exaggerates them, because otherwise, you can barely see them at all. I also moved the left foot under the left knee (you want him to have a stable standing position - right now, your version has his left foot at a very odd angle) I moved the belt up ~1px and moved the knee up. The knee should be about halfway between the foot and the belt. And finally, I moved his left arm left a few pixels, as I had suggested. If you put his arm like this, then it's more consistent with the way his body's turned and the way his armor is shaped. You shouldn't be able to see his shoulder.

The dagger's looking pretty good. Try antialiasing the edges a bit.

The new guy's arms are too short+ too thin. If you give him elbows, you can fix this and still leave his hands approximately where they are. The hands need to be a LOT bigger, though. The sword should be a bit bigger, wider, and farther down. Also, try giving him knees and bigger feet.

I liked my feet better, but I did the other things to it that you did, too, and tried making the dagger better.

.... I think you still don't quite understand.

I'm trying to help you.

I may not be as good as TSI or Jetryl or other artists, however:

1. Clearly you like the hands and feet; otherwise they wouldn't look the way they do.
2. The way they look is *wrong* as far as Wesnoth style goes. The way they fit together with the body is *wrong* as far as reality is concerned.
3. This is the biggest problem with the sprite.
4. I've shown you a way to fix this problem.
5. And you didn't change it at all.

Melinath, welcome to one of Woodmouse's art threads. Sit down, take a number. You're only the most recent in a long line of people who tried to offer advice.

If you critique and the artist disagrees, drop it. You've shared your critique, it's up to them to accept it or not.
But of course, I'm probably just a noob trying to act like a moderator...

Still, my turn to join the line of people waiting. The feet look like they're bent inwards to each other. You do not stand like that in real life under any condition unless your feet are malformed or you really need to use the bathroom.

I tried fixing it. Didn't spend over a minute on it, but I think it looks a bit more natural. I like the top very much... It's the feet that needed the work.

Referencing the critique guidelines is never bad, but in this case the user is merely pointing out that the artist is ignoring it all together, not disagreeing.

Still, as I noted, the best melinath can do is just bite his tongue and move on.

As to attempting to act like a moderator, if you do try to do something like that, you and I are probably not going to get along.

I continue making Dark Elves, and Swamp Dwarves, but now I decided to try making a better Mudcrawler, because the current ones seem somehow... old. I don't know if this is any better than the current one, but well. I tried. C&C?

i like it :)

one thing you may work on is to attempt to make it look more like a mud/blackslime -crawler and less like to be made out of stone.

actually it could be also some kind of animated/enchanted stone

i dont know exactly how to achieve that though :P

in any case i saved it and it may find a way into a new SX Map
The best bet is your own, good Taste.

Hmm...
Yea, I don't know if this helps, but I tried making it better and "slimey".

And cool, I love SX.
Oh, and Mabuse, will the new SX map be for 1.6x?

IMHO, the second one looks more like a stone than the first. Mud always seems to have sticks and junk in it, maybe putting a bit of that in him will make him seem less.. solid? That and increase the 'wetness' look, the first one looks pretty dry and hard, and the second one looks shiny and hard. Reference images might help with that one. Regardless, it looks pretty neat.

You know, that's not half bad at all.

Have you thought of doing another size for the second mudcrawler?

Okay, I added some sticks sticking from it. Is this better?
