question about shading
Ive been working on shading and im not sure about this particular case. If it is an orb (shiny) being hit by light from a particular direction, should I have or not have the bright highlight around the edge of the orb. It seems to me that the our eyes would interpret there to be light around the orb even though the light is not coming from any of those directions. Which way is better, in your guys' opinion (at least for Wesnoth). With or without the highlighted edge. Does it even make sense to have the highlight or am I just making up things.

It's true that objects usually reflect ambient light, and for that reason the darkest area of the shadow is not necessarily at the "horizon". The problem with the first image is that the shadow ends abruptly before the edge.
But there are no solid rules, it all dependes on the lighting, the surface reflectivity of the object, what's behind it, etc.
