I wasn't talking about just fuzzy edges, but fuzzy shadows in the umbra/penumbra sense, like this:

I realise that, I was talking about the origional reason for the fuzzy edges, I was thinking of the multiple shadows that you meant, however that picture will be very useful for reference to see how it works. Its perfect because at teh beginning the shadows are sharp and clear cut, giving hte dramatic effect, but it has the multiple shadows bit that suggests more than one light source too.
