Mermen and Naga names

Post by Ranger M »

I just noticed that there are no Naga male or Mermen female names in the list that gives units names. Is there going to be in version 1.1, or has nobody noticed?

The Naga male names have already been added in 1.1-svn.
I made a bug report for the female Merman names. I believe however you can't recruit them anywhere in the game by default.

You can recruit them in Mermens plight, but I am not sure if that would be included in default.

Uh... no.

However, just because you can't get a unit in default doesn't mean they shouldn't have names. ;)

Hence the bug report.

Also I just noticed you can indeed recruit Mermaids in Isle of the Damned. So anyone feel free to come up with some names for them and maybe we can get them in before 1.1 is released.

Some mermaid names:

Atargatis or Derketo (Assyrian folklore)
Mama Wata (West African folklore)
Jengu (Cameroun folklore)

Miranda (referring to the bad flick ;) )

Syrenka (the official warrior mermaid on the Coat of Arms of Warsaw)

Lori Lamaris (a mermaid in the Superman comics - we could just go with Lori)

Ariel (maybe we shouldn't risk the wrath of Disney :D )

Uh.. as i said "Syrena" means "Siren" in polish and "Syrenka" mean "little siren". I think it's wrong to call mermaid "little syren".

Ok, since "Syrenka" doesn't seem appropriate i removed it from the list (and also edited my previous post).
Since i don't speak polish this wasn't obvious to me.

Note that these names won't be in 1.1 since it is already being released (altrough the release process is not yet totally completed, the SVN trunk is already past 1.1).
About the male nagas they already have a list of male names for their race, so if it is still broken we have to find out what is wrong (if it is still broken).

Uness I'm completely mistaken name lists may be translated. So if one name is bad for polish, simply remove or replace it in the polish translation. People playing other languages may still use it then.

Normally, I don't do this, but most of these are awful names - "mama wata" is one of the worst. I also really, really don't want to rip off mythological terms for names of individual game characters. Names of unit types are fine with mythological terms, but not the units themselves.

Expect to see a post from me with, IMO, better names. :?

They'll be based on what I'd consider effeminate mutations of the existing male names.

That said, thanks to everyone for taking initiative - it has a wonderful tendency to make things happen. :)

Well it is tru e thatr most of these names come from the mythology, but it is +/- the case for some male Mermen too, althrough they have a lot more names.
And in fact the names aren't mostly used as is but are used through the markovian name generator.
A lot of mermen names sound polynesian, so i think more mermaid names that sound polynesian would be welcomed (currently there is 'Vatea', and ... that's all).
Btw i'm not a big fan of some of the name in the list, in particular some of the first names of the list, so i wouldn't mind if they are replaced, but i think a longer list would be better, it would give more diversitiy for the markovian generator.
I commited the list because it was better than nothing and i guessed some people may improve it later, so please go for it if you want to do it :)
