Costs for level 2 & 3 (& 4) units

Once I got it working, this program of mine ran off these costs in a few seconds. Some of them, of course, are wrong. Elvish Marshal, for instance. That it thinks the Drake Flameheart is better than the Inferno Drake isn't because it's got them right, it's that the Flameheart is better than the Inferno Drake even discounting leadership.

Sometime soon, I'll put some re-balance on the messed up ones.

Most of those costs seem much too high. I would usually prefer, for example, three orcish assassins (with your suggested new costs, 18*3=54) to one orcish slayer (57). I wouldn't prefer two, though (18*2=32). So it looks to me like many of your costs are about 20 gold too high.

Is the slayer cost discounting poison? If so, it is ever more overpriced than I thought, if that is what it suggests for a non-poison unit...

It discounts poison. The reason you would prefer three assassins is because they poison stuff. If none of them had poison... think about it. The Slayer would have thrice as powerful melee, twice as powerful ranged, and more HP.

Very well, i'll take a different example. Goblin knight (50 gp) vs 3 wolf riders (3*17=51). For one more GP, you get two more units. They are less powerful, yes, but together they can scout more, ZoC a unit, and do about the same cumulative damage.

However, it might be unbalanced for scouts as well, so I'll try another example.
Necromancer (44 gp). Dark Adept will probably end up costing 17. Three dark adepts (3*17=51) costs 7 gold more than the necromancer, but is IMHO worth a lot more than 7 gold more than a necromancer.

Of course, all of this is subjective. Any examples showing these are valid would be appreciated.

Those do look more balanced. Would it be possible for the formula to take specials into account, or would that be too hard?

but i'm wondering, what is it in the formula that makes leader units cost insanely high amounts?

It wouldn't really make sense. The formula could account for specials, but it would then lose the dependence on the first level that makes the costs anywhere near balanced. Basically, it would be guesswork.

It's the "Multiply by level 1 cost". Kapou'e, for instance, costs 120 gold at level 1.

An improvement. But is the ogre really that much better than the young ogre? Young Ogres cost 15*3=45. Ogres "cost" 39. Two young ogres cost 2*15=30. I'm not sure if the ogre deserves that big a cost jump. To 35 would be more appropriate, IMHO.

Of course, we could always just implement these and see if its an improvement.

Have you by any chance applied these changes to the units and looked at AI v. AI age of heroes games? I would do so, and see if some units aren't too cheap.

I'd like to thank you both for trying to hash this out. This has been a long standing grievance of mine... and I suspect its been a grievance of anybody who has mucked a lot of WML. So thank you very much!

Do you think you could take a look at the monsters (Like my Neo drawn Fire Dragon)?

I'll let this thread go on for a bit longer then I'll put it to the list... I don't have much time right now, but I'll make time for this. Thanks!

My guess is the ambush thing, but that wouldn't make that big a difference IMHO. Those numbers look balanced, at least the Avenger does. Elvish Ranger might be slightly too low, but not much.

I really don't know why you marked these. They don't have a specialty, AFAIK. Although they are kind of low, I don't know what would cause it.

And I ask anyone who's good at shell scripts to write one that substitutes the values outputted by this into the unit files, so balancing can proceed. ;|

Well, I don't think ambush is very important, but some people do. Yes, that's why I marked them.

It doesn't understand that they gain 20% resistance to Impact and Blade.

They're low because Spearman's cost is low. How much better is 8-4 than 7-3 & 7-1 anyway?

I've mentioned this on the mailing list but I do have one big concern. Units that have 'vanilla' (AKA no funky abilities) upgrades seem to have too low of a price. You complained that my: "If it's a 'typical' wesnoth style upgrade multiply by 1.75" system produced costs that are too low, but this system produces numbers that are 'too low' for 'vanilla' units.

Maybe (ever so) slightly less value placed on 'specials' and more value placed on the things that go up for 'vanilla' units??? I really think this system is a good way foreward, but as Turin pointed out some values need a bit of work...
