What about having differents tarballs for source, maps ... ?
To reduce update time (and download time), it could be great to have separate packages for source or binary, for game data (scenarii and maps), graphics (artwork, menus, units), for sounds (music, sound effects), ...
I think sound should be an optionnal package.

This is a reasonable idea, however the reason everything is currently in one package is because to be honest, I find it irritating when I want to download a game and I have to download more than one package. Admittedly I am on cable, but I found it irritating even when I was on dial-up.
I think the best solution would be to offer it as one package, and to offer it in multiple packages. Perhaps the one big package would only be for stable versions though.
However, I think that to help with download speed, time would currently be better spent in trying to convert the images over from bmp to png format, since images form the lion's share of the package size.

Converting all these bmps to png is a great idea.
