A question for mainline campaign developers and maintainers

Post by Gambit »

Hello everyone.

I would like to collect some feedback about the Mainline Campaign Feedback forum. I'd really like your opinions on how useful you find the forum to be. Do you use the forum? How do you feel about the Q&A format? How could it be more helpful?

If you don't like the forum and don't use it, I'd like to hear that as well.

I am thinking (as part of the forum reorganization plan) of doing away with Mainline Campaign Feedback and its restrictive Q&A format. Instead I would like to display Mainline Campaign Development more prominently. It would be placed alongside Coder's Corner and Art Contributions under the "Development — Official" category.

However, I don't want to mess with these without hearing from the people who actually use them first. I have little experience with either section.

I've been reading all the reviews, and while it's nice to hear from players, the Q&A forms aren't very useful. It would be better if it was more free-form, and people could complain about whatever they wanted including the whole campaign.

I think removing "Feedback" from the name is not a good idea. If someone is searching through the forums with the intent of commenting on a campaign, that's what they will be looking for. You could do "Development & Feedback" though.

Note that “free-form” is pretty much the definition of the Scenario & Campaign Development and Mainline Campaign Development forums.

It would probably be renamed to "Mainline Campaign Discussion". The description would then note that it is for feedback from players as well as development discussion and coordination.

I guess that would work.

Maybe we could call it simply “Mainline Campaigns”?

I read all feedback threads for all campaigns I've been maintaining even if it sometimes takes years to act on the feedback given.

I actually find the Q&A format to be useful in that it's so much easier to check a thread and get a big picture of what people find too easy/difficult/annoying/great about a given scenario when the posts roughly follow the same format. Also, just as importantly, it keeps discussion to a minimum because the thread is solely devoted to feedback. I wouldn't want feedback to be lost in threads full of discussion, suggestions and funny stories, especially when sometimes I want to check how the feedback has changed over a long time period.

Of course, the Q&A format is also a bit too restrictive and revising the questions a bit would be a good idea. I'd just like to retain the feedback threads separate from the campaign development and discussion threads.

Do you use the forum?
Yes, the forum is very useful for me.
How do you feel about the Q&A format?
It is not the format it's more the whole structure of the forum.
How could it be more helpful?
Please give each scenario a subforum.
Not a single thread that bumps around and those nasty sticky threads that hold the link list.

Also, it makes sense to have different sections for each version of Wesnoth.

The proposed structure in a tree view:
  • Mainline Campaign Feedback
    • Wesnoth 1.11/1.12
      • Heir to the Throne
        • A general discussion Forum
        • 01 - The Elves Besieged
          • Sticky Thread -- General Feedback Form -- restricted to the Q&A Format
          • More (Maybe Sticky) Maintainer made question threads
          • More user made threads
        • 02 - Blackwater Port
        • And so on
      • A Tale of Two Brothers
      • An Orcish Incursion
      • And every other mainline Campaign
    • Wesnoth 1.9/1.10
    • Wesnoth 1.7/1.8
    • And so on...
