Now for those drakes.

Post by Neoriceisgood »

I decided that the drakes as they currently are just don't work so I plan on redoing the ones I (and other people) like from the current selection, and replacing the ones people greatly dislike with other drakes that bring greater diversion between the units.
anyone comments on wich units should go? (I have already decided to remove the drake mage)

Here are two new designs that I like a bit more compared to the normal drake fighter.

I think you shouldn't replace the drakes you get rid of. You should just get rid of them. :) Get the drakes down to about 4 base units, not 6 or 7.

gfx that need fixing:
the drake burner line. They all look the same but bigger.
the drake fighter -> warrior line. Same as above.

units that need deleting:
the drake clasher. Since you have fighters, whats the point?
the drake slave. Really, i don't think these fit.
you're already getting rid of drake mages (good).

I think thats about it. :)

Actualy perhaps it's better to get rid of the fighter instead of the clasher, the fighter is just the burner with reverse damage on melee/ranged ..though the clasher could get a good graphical make-over especialy on his leveled version.

I agree, and the fighter gfx are bad IMO anyway.

(Not that you can do better) Well the sword on it is extremely ugly for what I usualy do, and it just isn't "Special" enough; I'd prefer to replace it with something that actualy adds to the faction; like the red drake in my first post whom would probably get a fire melee to bring any of those heavy armored things to their knees.
Also a drake that wears armor that actualy gives him better defences against the physical weaponry would be good, because drakes worst problem is surviving long enough for enforcement to arrive.

I don't think anyone would object against the new clasher being able to fly?

Not every unit is a special unit.

I know, but it just didn't add to the faction, you're cheaper off with slaves and clashers for melee; and the burner if you ever needed fire.

That's like saying Heavy Infantry are better than Spearmen, and Mages better than Bowmen.

Well they are aren't they?
I just ment that it can be replaced by a far more usefull unit for the same cost; as many other drakes have blade damage, and many have fire; what realy makes him more than a combination of two other drakes?

Just my 2¢:

1] for graphical cohesiveness, the units should all share a reasonably similar color set. That way - different factions of the same race (northern elves vs. regular elves) can easily be told apart.

This is especially true of the skin tones. - my favorite skin tones would be a spectrum between the mages and the burners

2]I would vote for repurposing the clasher line (which has an awesome level 3, in looks) as the new warrior. He should not have three attacks, though - the mace has got to go - what on earth is he holding it with - a wing evolved into an arm?

I would have him using a long-handled sword than can be used as a piercing or slashing weapon.

I mean, personally, I rather liked the fighter line, and if it came down to it, I would rather have that than the clasher - level three of the clasher notwithstanding. The problem is, the clasher just doesn't look like a drake - it looks like an entirely different species. It's cool, but it doesn't fit in.

The petits are fine, except that they need to have the same colors as the other drakes - dark green/blue/brownish skin with red wings.

3]The mages should be a branch of the burners, as I said before. And they need a different costume. The level three that you had drawn looks great.

4]Slaves are really odd for multiplayer. They are a great unit for campaigns, but they seem so darned odd in multi. I mean - even if they are the slaves of the other drakes, one would think then that they would be rebellious, that they would be much weaker than the fighters, etc. Besides, their masters would have better use for them as laborers then as warriors.

Good luck with this. I think a more cohesive drake race design and a new graphics will make more people more likely to play the race and use it in their campaigns.

Thank you, by the way, for being willing to remove the mage - it is a rare thing, to have someone who is willing to prune away some of their work to better the sum of the parts.

That said, I think on unit that might be interesting for the drakes would be an armored warrior.

Which basically adds up to being what the clasher is now. The only thing it could use is different graphics - (keep the wings, for one - the unit might be weighed down too much to fly, but it shouldn't chop off it's wings). And it should breathe fire.

Also, I want to say that I really don't like the idea of drakes having two heads, unless the entire race has two heads.

Actually, with regards to anything that has multiple heads, I think we should design it so that it looks evolutionarily correct - which would mean it would have had to split from the evolutionary tree somewhere around the flatworm/insect/other stage - and insect would likely be too far along.

So something with two heads would not be anything of this world, nor anything that looks like something of this world with another head jammed onto it.

it happens that snakes grow a second head and don't have trouble with it :D

Here is the renewed clasher graphic by the way, and I find it funny that you like the level 3 clasher but not the previous forms because in all of the drake tree that thing is furthest away from being an actual drake,
Though I plan on adding new branches to the units where they grow more specialised in one of their attacks.
