I would give the bats for a lvl1 scout unit, with ZoC, maybe a little more hp, and something else...maybe the poison or the skirmisher ( i think i prefer the skirmisher on this, we have the ghouls, and there are complaints already right?).

Also, an idea like this has to look and feel better than the bat.
