City of Elaia, elves

Post by eurydike »

Lore:
The elven city of Elaia lies in the forest of Lintanir, where life has been peaceful for decades. The glowing palace, a governmental residence, lies in the heart of the city, where socialites gather and discuss communal affairs. In the halls of memory scholars cultivate the young minds to the legacy of the elves and record the history of Irdya. [name tower], a tower of delicate and graceful craftmanship rises through the skyline, the top shaped like a crescent moon which is lit by magical lights. There the elven mages gather and dedicate themselves to the arcane knowledge of magic. At [name], an elven war academy, warriors advance their understanding of strategy and swordplay. The citizens pride their artisans' craftmanship with elven steel from mundane items, such as oil lamps and cutlery, to platemails.

The slow-paced and ever-persistent political ploys to alter the societal dispositions were brought to a sudden halt, when archmage Charos was found murdered at the courtyard of the [name tower], grasping a piece of a scroll presumably torn from his hands. Who had dared to break the highest of the sacred laws? And defiled against the elaborate but silent etiquette of social powerplay? What was Charon working on night after night at the tower? Did someone want to prevent his work from completion? Is it an outsider? One of the oh so few permitted to visit the halls of memory for study? Had someone recruited the thieves for this unholy deed - and would even the thieves dare to do something so outrageous?

Description:

Units:
Elf knight: Platemail with a two-handed sword, no ranged attack. Resistance to blade and pierce, vulnerability for arcane and fire. Parry.

Elf [name - longblade?]: Unit with a long sword and blitz ability. Plain clothing, vulnerability each physical type, fire and arcane.

Elf thief: Chaotic, short sword and small mace, backstab (5-2 blade), dodge and pummel (6-1 impact).. Perhaps too many advantages here?

Elf archer: From default
Elf scout: From default
More ideas todo...

Gameplay & mechanics:
Parry: 10% defense bonus in melee combat only
Dodge: 2 counters each with a 15% chance to dodge a non-marksmanship non-magical attack. A counter is depleted on succesful dodge and the attack misses. At the start of own turn counters are refreshed. Dodge is checked before it's decided whether the attack hits or not, therefore it's comparatively more useful on terrains with lower defense. At least that's the current idea.
Blitz: Berserk for 2 rounds active only when attacking
Pummel: Backstab that stuns (slows) the target, but deals no extra damage.
Trip: Reduces target units movement points by 1 until end of opponents turn.

I was thinking the knight would be a gameplay-wise defining unit for the faction, a somewhat expensive unit with 40% defense on hills and flat, 50% in forests both of which would increase by 10% in melee due to parry. It would be vulnerable to magical attacks primarily and as expensive unit a good target. I'm not sure if it's easy to tweak the mechanics to make it a central unit. The chainmail unit is to be more cost-effective when pitted against the knight, considering mirrors, but much more vulnerable to archers unlike the knight. A shield unit if there's to be one would also be good against piercing ranged attacks. It's possible the knight become the shield unit, but so far that's not the idea.

Art: Current plan is to try and make placeholder images by modifying the default images. The elvish thief is a modification of regular thief, and huntress is obviously made by modifying elven archer. If anyone is interested in trying their hand at making one of these units, that would be appreciated. Mage image thanks to CelticMinstrel

Discussion:
In summary I want to create an era with an elven faction and the option of having the faction available along with the default factions. The faction would be primarily an elven faction and would have elven units primarily. So far the work is definitely more in progress than started and everything including the names are still open. Once the general themes and ideas about what the faction is going to be like in terms of gameplay then it'll be easier to synthesize their representations as actual units and details, or so I'm fancying. All kinds of suggestions including criticisms are sort of welcome, currently I'm having trouble coming with names for the places and the culture of the elven city so ideas about that would also be of potential use. The unit details are also open to changes - which are actually required for tweaking the gameplay. Thanks for taking interest.

I've always found that site somewhat useful for names.
It's a pretty cool tool imo.
