What is the Khalifate exactly?

Something is just bugging me. What is the Khalifate exactly? Is it an Islamic Khalifate? Is it a Tentacle of the Deep Khalifate? Is it my current working theory in which Drarves and Humans are the same Species and that the Khalifate is a future version of the Knalgan Alliance?

The Khalifate faction is the faction most reccently added to mainline Wesnoth, and was originally UMC. No, it's not supposed to be an Islamic Khalifate/Caliphate. No, I don't know why it was then given that name. The name was pretty heavily debated, but ultimately the dev team chose to stick with Khalifate, since (IIRC) that's what the faction's author wanted.
