Crafting an Era - Part 1: Bases

Post by Zigg »

Alright, i'm going to make an era in an organized way. Step 1 is bases. For Balance.

Humans

The base contains HP and MP for unarmoured or mountless Human Units.

HP - 25
MP - 6

Then you have Armors and Mounts, which cost Gold

Light Chainmail Armor - +5 HP costs 6 Gold 30% Blade Resist 10% Pierce Resist and 0% Impact Resist
Medium Chainmail Armor - +10 HP costs 11 Gold 30% Blade Resist 10% Pierce Resist and 0% Impact Resist
Heavy Chainmail Armor - +15 HP costs 16 Gold 30% Blade Resist 10% Pierce Resist and 0% Impact Resist
Light Plate Armor - +7 HP costs 9 Gold 40% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Medium Plate Armor - +12 HP -0.5 MP costs 14 Gold 40% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Heavy Plate Armor - +17 HP -1 MP cost 18 Gold 40% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Shoulder Plate Armor - +2 HP costs 4 Gold 40% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Upper Arm Plate Armor - +5 HP costs 7 Gold 40% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Full Arm Plate Armor - +8 HP costs 8 Gold 40% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Robes - +1 HP costs 1 Gold 0% Blade Resist 0% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Thick Robes - +1 HP costs 2 Gold 0% Blade Resist 0% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Cloak - +1 HP costs 1 Gold 0% Blade Resist 0% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Thick Cloak - +2 HP costs 2 Gold 0% Blade Resist 0% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist
Small Wooden Shield - +3 HP costs 4 Gold 10% Blade Resist 10% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist -30% Fire Resist
Medium Wooden Shield - +7 HP costs 8 Gold 10% Blade Resist 10% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist -30% Fire Resist
Large Wooden Shield - + 12 HP costs 12 Gold 10% Blade Resist 10% Pierce Resist and 10% Impact Resist -30% Fire Resist
Metal Shield - +8 HP costs 10 Gold 20% Blade Resist 20% Pierce Resist and 20% Impact Resist
Reinforced Metal Shield - +13 HP -0.5 MP costs 14 Gold 30% Blade Resist 30% Pierce Resist and 30% Impact Resist
Chainmail Belt - +1 HP cost 1 Gold

interesting concept, i wonder how it will turn out :) don't you think horses should rather enforce their own, set movement value rather than modify that of its rider?
Like cats? I've made a whole faction of them to kick ass with!
Don't like cats? I've made a whole faction of them to kick their asses! So everyone's happy :)

Hmm... So...

Heavy Armor + Thick Cloak + Heavy Shield + Medium Horse + All weapons:

HP:59
MP:6
Spear - 7-3 Firststrike
Sword - 5-4
Mace - 10-2
Bow - 6-3
Crossbow - 17-1
Cost: 65 gold

I wonder if anyone would buy this unit? I think I just might :lol2: . Except that I don't know about its tile Defenses, abilities and other statistical data... :)

Still, nice system though :). It seems to click well with Wesnoth conventions. I think I will call this unit 'Rambo'.

My suggestions is to make the base speed for humans 6 but:

Light armor = -1 movement points
Heavy Armor = -2 Movement points (the 4 we all known and love)

And for cavalry, the base speed should be 8, but if the rider has armor, it will get the same penalties. So a heavy cavalry unit should have 6 base speed.

Apart of that, I applaud your effort, and it could lead to a "create factions" tournament using gold cost rules as base and taking into account the gold limit like on "Pick your recruits" era.

The weapons costs are more tricky tought, and you omit the 4-4 bow attack (poacher).

Also I don't know if there should be a "gold cost" for the alignement (diurnal-nocturnal is the cheap one or default, while neutral must be payed off), for "always spawn with trait like fearless", and other abilities.

Finally if a tournament would be held, it wouldn't be only "the last faction remaining" is the one that wins, but the most creative/fun factor could count too.

Hope to read more about this.

No, because if light armor took 1 Medium would take 2 and heavy 3.

It is like that already.

Sounds too hard.

Ok, will add.

No alignment costs.

I don't plan on a tournament.

I slipped on the armor thing, I was refering to the last two ones having -1 and -2. I simply skimmed throught the armors and didn't saw the medium armor (I tought there was only light and heavy)

Reminds me of this.

You don't appear to be taking resists into account on your armour?

hmmm -
i see your armor lacks probably some effect on RESISTANCES ;)

EDIT: i see gambit has pointed this out already.
well, i can tell you that if you lack resistances then the combat with be very flat (and boring - no "paper, stone, scissors" feeling at all))

probably you should not call the HP boni armor or something (they dont need a name at all, call them just "HP UP"), instead you should actuall have armor that gives resistances (for example chainmail offers some protection against blade, but none versus impact and not much versus pierce - a padded jack offers some resistance versus impact and pierce, plate armor offers protection against blade and pierce ... and so on blabla)

i see where you come from, and such a system may be helpful when creating new units, but of course only within certain limits, so that the units itself make some sense
The best bet is your own, good Taste.

I think it's quite silly that you are having hp cost 1g per 1hp.

Think about the Orcish Grunt.

What about traits like resilient?

@ Mabuse - Not for long.

@ JW - This isn't intended to be balanced with default because it is it's own era. And i don't understand your second comment.
