Balancing Extended Era Modification (BEEM)
(for Wesnoth 1.6)

I dreamed this moment for a long time. Not exactly since I started to work on the BEEM, but not much later.
Ok, sorry if I missed the presentations but I'm quite excited :)

My nick is Voodoo and I have played Wesnoth for about 2y and a half but only in the last months I decided to create my own era.
This idea came in my mind while playing the Extended Era modification. It's a great era, with plenty of new factions. But it has a not unimportant problem: it's not balanced!
Every time I played online with my friends there were arguments such as "Araghwaith are too strong!!" or "Dark Elves are cool but too weak!" etc.
Therefore, the pleasure of playing with (near) perfect balanced factions of the predefined era was lost.
And here the idea came! "Why not to do a new era with the Extended Era balanced?" asked myself. So I created BEEM, Balanced Extended Era Modification, with the first publication on 23/03/08.
After 5 releases (from 0.1 to 0.5) the work was at good point. But.. why should I stop myself to the Extended Era? Why shouldn't I go on balancing for example the Era of Myths? It's another wonderful era but with the same problem: unbalanced factions.
Beside the "Balanced Extended Era" era, I added the "Balanced All Eras" era: here I'll put all the new factions from all eras. It'll always be the recommended era for multiplayer matches/tournaments.

Yeah! This is my dream: that BEEM would become the standard era for multiplayer matches/cups!!
For this purpose, I also worked on finding 1vs1 and 2vs2 balanced maps.

Summarizing:

- BEEM is born with the intention of balancing the EE

- Now BEEM has the purpose to become the standard era for multiplayer matches/cups

- There are four eras: "Balanced Extended Era" that's a balanced EE, "Balanced for Tournaments era" that contains all the balanced factions of BEEM, the "Balanced Advanced Era" that's an era with all faction of the previous era but with some advanced abilities, the "Balanced Guilds Era" that's for now a beta era and only for fun.

- "Balanced for Tournaments Era" will always be the suggested era for multiplayer matches/cups. In the future (maybe) I'll add new eras, but they will have different purposes, for example simply to have fun with strange or different factions (but balanced each other!)

- I'll try to add a new balanced faction every new version, about every 1/2 months


I want to say thank you to the creators of the Extended Era mod. I hope they won't be angry with me since I modified their original work. Without EE, BEEM wouldn't exist.

The release of Wesnoth 1.6 is near, so from now on I'll support only Wesnoth 1.5.x and later.

You are correct :)
I first balanced EE against EE sides and I called the era "Balanced Extended Era".
Then I started to add new factions in a new era called "Balanced All Eras". So I added (for now) Elementals, Minotaurs, Lavinians and Vampires :)

The Kalifa were already balanced vs. default, you could have started from there. (balancing vs EE and default races)

Kalifa, in my opinion, are a bit particular.. I preferred to start from the Loyalists and Sylvans. They are (a bit) stronger than the default factions. So All BEEM factions are (a bit) stronger than the default ones :)

Kalifa were originally meant to be added to default, though they obviously didn't make that. The "extended default" factions are just the default factions with extra units piled on, which obviously makes them overpowered.

Yeah sure, EE/BEEM factions are stronger the default factions. I just took the EE factions and balanced each other starting from Loyalists and Sylvans. Than I added new factions.
Even though Kalifa were originally meant to be added to default, they are a good faction, so I just modified them to be ok with the others. And... I think they were originally a little stronger than the default factions (I'm speaking about the EE)

What do you mean?

I know that, for now, BEEM uses most of the same factions of EE/EOM.
I admire EE and EOM creators but I'm not satisfied of their work. I mean, their work is fantastic but an unbalanced era is unusable in cups/tournaments, imho.
I took EE, EOM and others as first step of a bigger work. If you wait some months, you will also see some completely new factions :)

They mean that if you have both BEEM and EE installed they conflict with eachother, probably making one or both malfunction.

There could be the same ID used in the unit cfg confusing the computer as to which one is should use.
Latin:LVDVMAMISI (pronounced Loo-dum amee-C)

Yes, always remember to change the IDs if you're modifying the units or any other stat producing files (movetypes, traits, etc)

Thanks for the advices.. I have to admit you are right. Actually, there are some little problems of combatibility about BEEM, EE and EOM. But at most tomorrow (I hope in the morning) I'll release a new version with every problem fixed. I worked on them all this morning and I'm at good point :)

I released the 1.1 version on the public server!
I think all compatibility problems with EE, EoM and Imperial Era have been fixed :)
You can test by yourself :)
