A completely new style of playing (War of Chaos Era)

Post by Madnessbane »

Me and a few friends of mine came up with the idea of creating a new Wesnoth Era that had a very different style/balance compared to the other Era's we have played.

The War of Chaos Era will initially contain 5 teams (I am not disclosing any names or images at this point, except the ones in my avatar) (currently 3 teams are playable)

All teams have a level 7 leader, with unique abilities and skills.

TEAM 1:
-lawful team
-possesses a new element of magic
-posses several new abilities and skills
-expensive units (around 30 gold each)
-difficult to level (compared to other races in the Era, as I said, totally different balancing system)
-above average power units
-4 base units, each unit has 2 paths

-LEVELING SYSTEM FOR TEAM 1 AS FOLLOWS:
level 1 unit: starting unit
level 2 unit: same as the previous unit, with slightly higher stats and higher exp required (the unit is named the same as the previous unit with "experienced" in the name)
level 3: changed form, different skills and animations
level 4: same as the previous unit, with slightly higher stats and higher exp required (the unit is named the same as the previous unit with "experienced" in the name)
level 5: changed form, different skills and animations
level 6: same as the previous unit, with slightly higher stats and higher exp required (the unit is named the same as the previous unit with "experienced" in the name)
This is the highest level unit, level 6 units have an ALMA of 8

TEAM 2:
-neutral/chaotic team
-possesses a two new elements of magic
-possess several new abilities and skills
-expensive/medium units (around 20-25 gold each)
-moderate to level
-average power units
-6 base units, all units but one have only one path

-LEVELING SYSTEM FOR TEAM 2 AS FOLLOWS:
level 1 unit: starting unit
level 2 unit: same as the previous unit, with slightly higher stats and higher exp required (the unit is named the same as the previous unit with "experienced" in the name)
level 3: changed form, different skills and animations
level 4: same as the previous unit, with slightly higher stats and higher exp required (the unit is named the same as the previous unit with "experienced" in the name)
level 5: changed form, different skills and animations
level 6: same as the previous unit, with slightly higher stats and higher exp required (the unit is named the same as the previous unit with "experienced" in the name)
level 7: changed form, different skills and animations, no ALMA, but powerful skills

TEAM 3:
-neutral/lawful/chaotic team
-possess several new abilities and skills
-cheap units (around 15-20 gold each)
-easy to level
-bellow average power units
-3 base units, units have 3 leveling paths

-LEVELING SYSTEM FOR TEAM 3 AS FOLLOWS:
level 1 unit: starting unit
level 2: changed form, different skills and animations
level 3: changed form, different skills and animations, can choose whether to turn into a
more advanced level 1 unit, or back into itself (giving it no advantage, but restored hp)
level 1: same as first level 1 unit, but slightly stronger and have refined added to the name
level 2: same as first level 2 unit, but slightly stronger and have refined added to the name
level 3: same as first level 3 unit, but slightly stronger and have refined added to the name
Highest level unit, no ALMA

-TEAM 4 IN DESIGN

-TEAM 5 IN DESIGN

having different leveling styles for different teams (especially the difference in team 3) might appear to not work, but during all the balancing testing so far they seem surprisingly compatible.

I will be releasing this era when the following is complete

TEAM 1
-basic sprites (COMPLETE)
-basic code (COMPLETE)
-balancing (COMPLETE)
-animations (COMPLETE)
-missile animations (COMPLETE)
-animation/sound coding (COMPLETE)
-testing all sprites and code (IN PROGRESS)
-final balancing with all teams

TEAM 2
-basic sprites (COMPLETE)
-basic code (COMPLETE)
-balancing (COMPLETE)
-animations (COMPLETE)
-missile animations (COMPLETE)
-animation/sound coding (COMPLETE)
-testing all sprites and code (COMPLETE)
-final balancing with all teams

TEAM 3
-basic sprites (COMPLETE)
-basic code (COMPLETE)
-balancing (IN PROGRESS)
-animations
-missile animations
-animation/sound coding
-testing all sprites and code
-final balancing with all teams

TEAM 4
-basic sprites
-basic code
-balancing
-animations
-missile animations
-animation/sound coding
-testing all sprites and code
-final balancing with all teams

TEAM 5
-basic sprites
-basic code
-balancing
-animations
-missile animations
-animation/sound coding
-testing all sprites and code
-final balancing with all teams

suggestions, comments, and feedback would be appreciated

With so many levels, the exp required to advance has to be pretty low. But if the exp is too low, it'll be really annoying to try and kill units. Default has a good balance of the two.

Try it out, it may work, it may not.

the exp required to advance doesnt need to be much lower at all, because there are higher leveled units to kill, there are higher amounts of exp to gain.

How about of partial heal instead of full heal when leveling up?

Or, if leveling up involves the increment of hp, keep the percentage of hp left before level up and multiply it by the new maximum hp.

yeah, all the details aren't figured out with team 3 yet, I've pretty much just done the basic sprites and essential coding.

When I've finished testing Team 1 I will put the Era with Team 1 and 2 up if anyone is interested in having a look.
