Re: Kitty's Merfolk: Merman Spearman
Hmm, I actually like the face the way it is now.
Since it hasn't a real flaw I'd like to see him commited as he is now.

Is he holding a giant wooden tuning fork?
Also thats a wicked long/odd mustache. Makes him look a little like a catfish to me
But I'm not an artsy guy

He looks so dapper/johnny-depp. Totally relaxed.
Is that what the clubs look like? Nifty.

Also to my layman eyes, the webbing on the hand looks a little weird. I think its cuz it goes way far up his thumb. Think about it, if his thumb was webbed that closely to his pointer finger he wouldn't really even be able to use it to grab/manipulate things properly. Like I dont think he could even grab the club he has in his other hand because the shaft/handle goes right through where the webbing would be
Here is a picture I found that looks more realistic to me

I'm not really an art guy so maybe I'm wrong, just some thoughts I had.

I thought those clubs were solid whale bone, not gap-down-the-middle wood. But otherwise, he looks great, there's a certain piratical attitude really ringing through.

- The wheapon is something like a hawaiian koa sword - a war club. I like the sea feel those weapons have. But I'm not particularly attatched to it, perhaps he'll get something different in the process.
- For the beard being catfish-like: that's exactly what I was going for...
- And about the finger webbing: hmm, technically you're right. But I've done it this way for all the merfolk up to now and I'm not sure if it bothers me enough to get back to changing all of them.
melinath:
Yeah, the beard/bandana combination gets very depp-like easily -but there are worse things...
tsi:
As I told Jet I don't like the mermen getting too pirate-y, since it doesn't fit well with the overall roman/atlantian feel. But with a bandana and a mustache I can't avoid it. For the weapon I'll probably need to have another talk with him, for the representation in the sprite both could work - I'll need to hear how important the whalebone is to him.

Re: Kitty's Merfolk: Merman Netcaster
The ancient romans had pirates too you know
But actually, with the facial hair he has, he reminds me more of an eastern Mediterranean type - maybe Turkish or Baltic. So it fits well. He just seems a little looser and less straight-military than the others, which probably makes sense, given that he's probably a fisherman in his civilian guise.

His right shoulder armor (our left) doesn't look right to me. Is it facing too far forward?

The weapon you drew is great, and this looks awesome.kitty wrote:For the weapon I'll probably need to have another talk with him, for the representation in the sprite both could work - I'll need to hear how important the whalebone is to him.

Re: Kitty's Merfolk: Merman Netcaster
That's not a spear! Are netcasters getting an impact melee then? If so, that's nice--I invented a unit for my campaign to make up for the impact deficiency of the merfolk. Fantastic 'stache, in my opinion, and I don't think the webbing is too big a problem as long as it's stretchy.
I agree with maybeenot about the shoulder though. I think the shoulder and pauldron are shown in different perspectives.

kitty:
The only other merfolk that has this problem is your Enchantress. All other merfolk of yours have both hands occupied
The priestess has webbing showing on her staff hand that looks a little odd (because her fingers are spread so far on the one hand compared to other merfolks) but you dont see the thumb so its ok.
I noticed it on the Enchantress too but only way after you had finished the portrait, so I didnt say anything.
