ok, i've got the scout shaded and two versions- one without and one with hat. and i really hate the one with the hat....

some thoughts about representation, sprites and portraits:
to me wesnoth is kind of a fantasy world, the sprites/units symbolize persons/troops. they are certainly representations and NOT the "real" guys - look at the way they move through the forest, how one can stand for serveral, the size comparison to houses and so on. because they are so small, they need simple means to get identifiable. symbols like the hats with the bright red feathers (which a "real" archer wouldn't use to stay camourflaged), the outrider's white horse and so on. and the generic unit portraits are a representation of the virtual "real" guys, too. and portraits have other needs than sprites, more realistic armour, same greens to make them appear as one army etc. thus sprits and portraits stand for the same guy but are only representations and all this "the unit has a light grey tunic" babble may be interesting to suggest sth about the real (for example) fighter's character but not more.

does that make any sense?

I don't see any problems with an elf-woman hitting somebody with a mace...

I like the picture without hat more than with hat. You are a really good artist kitty! :)

One more vote for sans headpiece.

I find it a bit awkward how the horse's muzzle is cut off. Actually, there would have been room for it to hold the head high enough for the whole of it to be visible without covering too much of the rider.

No hat. That squashy flat-cap thing is not nice...

I do like the hat ... I don't care much, both are very nice.

I personally like the fact that you've prepared both. More stuff for custom campaigns and such ;)

Well, I like the one with the hat a lot more than the hatless for some reason. The image seems more balanced somehow (maybe because the otherwise light/bright head is at the very edge of the image; slap on the hat and it provides some padding between the head and the edge).

I like the one with the hat better, but if everyone else prefers the one without the hat, then perhaps we could put the hat in his hand or something?
And he has a quiver on his back, but I don't see any sign of a bow. Is that a problem?

I'm assuming the bow is strapped to the far side of the horse, personally.

i actually like the one with the hat, only because i dont personally like that clump of hair at the top of his head. on a side note what types of headgear do elves wear? theres the robinhood hat, and the baret style hat... but im kind of lost what else they could wear, i mean i cant think of anything. especially helmets, since i dont think a metal helmet with leather armor would look correct (my guess).

I assume leather helmets - such as the Javelineer wears - would be appropriate.
