New swamp

Post by mog »

The current swamp looks decent, but seems to be more like muddy water. So I started to add some plants and reed as overlays.

Any comments? Should I continue?

What does it look like with units in it? Or rather, how do the overlays and the 'sinking unit' effect interact?

It looks great! Finally something that actually looks like a swamp! :D
I wish I had more time in my hands.

+1 to the carry on camp.

seriously, these do look great, although it seems a little sparse in places on the one with units.

I'd call it better then the current one already and given freims approval it should make its way into 1.2 hopefully.

It's a definite improvement, but it needs more variations on the twigs/fallen branches and flowers. Also, it would be nice if it had a outline for the transition with land, something foamy and brown or green would look nice IMO.

These would be nice improvements, but I wholeheartedly welcome adding it in as-is.

Is it possible to make the cutoff line (the one at which unit sinks) less straight? :?:

I'd prefer terrain to resemble the minute photorealistic multi-hex style of the mountains more*, but this works too.

*Especially if water/plains was changed this way...

Funnily enough, I tried it a few days back. You can do it, but units which especially wide might end up looking a bit funny. Not necessarily any more funny than they do now though. All you need is to edit the misc/ellipse-top and misc/ellipse-bottom images (top gets drawn behind the unit and bottom in front of the unit, when submerging).

Yeah, the unit 'half-sink' effect looks wierd with the overlays. That's what I was afraid of.
However I definately agree with the masses that the swamp itself looks great.

An idea: would it be possible to code some of the plants go over the units? That way the Elves (or whatever) would appear to be standing among the reeds, rather then slapped on top.
Disclaimer: I have no coding knowledge and thus no idea how possible this is, if at all.

EDIT: I just noticed, the Elves in that screenshot don't have the TC circles around them. The circles usually make the 'half-sink' look less wierd.

Great work!! The most ugly terrain isn't the most ugly anymore...

Mog, I'm so sorry that I had forgotten our ice-transitions project.
