Sea Serpent Portrait WIP

One of the things that perhaps make it look a bit like an inflatable water toy is the fact that it's not really submerged almost at all, but seems to float at the surface.
Perhaps submerging it more, to about this level, would help? Just a thought.

Looks great! I'm not sure about the submerged parts showing through the water (it doesn't do that in mermen portraits, and I think it looks slightly better that way), but I don't think it's such a big deal though.Pic wrote:New improved version!
One possible place of improvement: the position or angle of the head. Now it just touches the body, and it might look better (somehow just more pleasing to the eye) if it was angled forwards maybe 10 degrees more, instead of angled downwards (so there would be a little gap, maybe 5-10 pixels, between the jaw and body).
New new improved version!
[Edit] I like the slightly see through water actually, makes it look more like water. I will see what the general consensus on this is. If people don't like it matching the other water portraits and can all ways tweak them as well [/edit]

Suggestion: Add splashes in the water near the tail and fins, as though it is thrashing about.
Fin should be deeper underwater so that it's actually useful for movement.
Translucent water effect is good if you add a mask so that only the parts near the surface are showing, the rest fading into the murky depths.

what you are probably seeing is that for some reason the perspective on the water suggests that it is slanting upwards where it touches him (like a mini crater), although I can't work out why it's very similar to the merman water lines, with a couple of minor differences, but they shouldn't be causing that effect.Zhukov wrote: The water-line looks wrong. Can't say why.
Everything else looks good.
Of course, if there are splashes surrounding him then that effect makes sense.
That's not it, but I know what is. The water-line doesn't follow the seprent's body properly. For example, look at his 'chest' where it's especially noticable. Although his body bulges outwards at that point, the water is almost a straight line, as if the serpent was a cardboard cutout being poked up throught the water. The same thing is evident on the end of his tail, the bit poking up on the right.
I suck at putting this kind of thing into words, but hopefully the artist understands what I'm getting at.
EDIT: I reccomend taking a very close look at the current portraits for the Merman Fighter and Initiate. That's how I figured this out.

The sea serpent shows up a handful of times in mainline campaigns with a speaking part.
When it does show up, it's roaring and being mean and hungry. Let's make this guy ferocious! He never has a civil conversation.

Hope springs eternal.
