"-1 unread messages" - victorious on my own

"-1 unread messages" - victorious on my own
Since I entered my pms today, the pm button reads "0 new messages, -1 unread messages". There is, however, nothing strange in the inbox.
What does it mean, and how do I fix it?
PS: I have managed to fix it myself by marking most pms on the first page and choosing "mark as read". So you can (probably) ignore it.

After far too long an absence, I have returned.
