The Cry of the Wolf

Post by pauline »

Is this the appropriate forum for a question regarding the BfW-wolves ?

I just wonder about the "wolf-die"-sound that so effectively highlighted this event
when I first played through mainline (v1.8.6, September 2012).
It was a nicely scary, (as far as I can judge) typical howling.
I can´t say when this great sound "has been eaten by the wolf", but
there´s no option in the present core (or so it seems to me),
not even as a "wolf-fit +merry.ogg" ...
I should be surprised if a majority deemed the howl of wolves unsuitable ... :hmm:

@ zookeeper: What ?
About this howling-sound ? ... It did exist once. I am certain of it.
Or where this .ogg file got caught ? ... Well, that´s the cause of my amazement.

I suppose there used to be some wolf related sound in game that isn't anymore and he is asking why it isn't anymore.

No wolf sounds have been removed since 1.8.

@ alluton: Indeed.
@ zookeeper: But there still ARE several "wolf related"sounds …
The BfW-wolves growl and squeak and whimper and groan when hit or dying,
but they don´t howl anymore … at least not the mainline-wolves.
Since a better word doesn´t come into my mind listen to this
That´s what I mean, and the "ancient" BfW-wolves were able to emit this sound.
Why has the most common sound of this animal been removed ?
It´s just a file of few KB ...

This is probably what it is (in a case):
old-wolf-die.zip
(16.03 KiB) Downloaded 494 times
I think the new one (current one) is closer to what you post than the old one. It just says "Awooo...".

But actually, if using it something like this:

Code: Select all

        [sound]
            name=wolf-die.wav
        [/sound]
        [delay]
            time=150
        [/delay]
        [sound]
            name=wolf-die.wav
        [/sound]
        [delay]
            time=300
        [/delay]
        [sound]
            name=wolf-die.wav
        [/sound]
it sounds like more Coyotes.:) (I mean it is usable, and I am using it.)

@ SkyOne: Now, THAT´s much better than a wimpy-sound, isn´t it ?
(Your campaigns just scaled UP significantly on my To do-list.)
Actually, I started wondering why no one else is wondering about this missing sound
with all that powerful Great Wolves and Dire Wolves and at least 4 types of Wolf Riders ...

So, thanks for the zip, but what do you mean by the "new one (current one)" ? :shock:
I can´t find neither the "Awooo..." of a wolf nor a coyote in the BfW-core-sounds-file.
Has this s.th. to do with playing the 1.10.7 version ?

Ah... I think some people mentioned it on this forum before, including I am, but not really recently.

I mean that the old one, "Awooo...", sounds not really real wolves, but current one does (although the current one is not a howling-sound). You will know it if you listen to the file.

The file is actually for dying, so it doesn't really have to be a howling. Maybe, someone may create the howling-sound for a different purpose in the future, though.

Oh, 1.8 is that old.

Yes, wolf-die.wav was removed at the same time the new wolf sounds were put in.

@ SkyOne: I DID listen to your file, and yes: that´s the one I´ve been looking for.
I guess you kept a copy before it was dismissed, thus having the privilege now of providing a real good howl for wolves in your campaigns.
I remember that I though the title "old-wolf-die" kind of strange:
THIS animal doesn´t sound old, and no, I doubt a dying wolf would howl at all.
The current squeak- and whimper-sounds are just fine for this purpose.
Now, why would s.o. have to create a new sound ? :hmm:
Wouldn´t it just be a matter of reactivating and renaming this old, removed file ?

@ zookeeper: So, what would be necessary to get SkyOne´s "old-wolf-die".ogg back to mainline with a new title ?
S.th. like "very much alive, very strong direwolf entering the scene marking the hunting ground and calling the pack".ogg ?
Btw: I´m not a desperate writer searching for a proper sound for his character.
I ( presumably others like SkyOne, too) just like that "old" sound better, more impressive than "growling"
as long as a BfW-wolf is alive and kicking/biting.
One or the other author might get inspired if it was available again ... ;)

I am not putting the old sound back in. Anyone can include it in their add-on if they want to use it.

Maybe a howling sound (although not necessarily the old one) might fit together with an idle animation (not played frequently).

We develop Wesnoth in a revision control system.
This system maintains the project's history.
Thus you can ask it for every file and state being in Wesnoth at any time of the past.
Meaning the wolf sound you like so much won't get lost. :)
